Ok here's the deal. Took my car out on Saturday and my brake pedal goes to the floor. Get home (1/2 mile) and park the car and take my truck to run my errand. Well I get home and there is brake fluid all over my driveway.

I was planning to do the rear brakes (just rotors and pads) anyway, but now that I need a caliper too I am thinking cobra rear brake kit. So:

1. Where is the best place to get a cobra rear brake kit (p/n)?
2. Can i run the stock fronts and the cobra rears for a few months as I can't really afford $800 to do corba brakes all around right now.

Thanks Guys.
Chris

fyi, I believe the caliper on the cobra and the gt are the same in the rear, they just have a different bracket... if that helps with anything

other than that, I'd search, there are numerous threads on cobra brake upgrade

oh, and make sure the spout isn't just loose on the rear caliper wherever it was leaking

Rear cobra braket kit M2300M $154
Front Cobra conversion M2300R $385

Total $539

Prices from John Bleakley Ford

It really bothers me that places like StangSuspension.com will lie to people and tell them they need to buy cobra rear calipers. I think that is why people think they must spend 800 dollars to upgrade their brakes.

that is very interesting, thank you for pointing that out about the cobra rear calipers. And yes, companies who try to decieve people like that should be ashamed of themselves.

If you have time...I'd rebuild the rear calipers. Shouldent cost more than $40 bux. Damn, $800 for rear cobra brakes???!!! You could get the Baer rear track kit ofr that much. And that comes with aluminum single piston pbr calipers and I believe you have your choice of 12" or 13.25" rear rotors. Way better brakes and value than a "all new rear cobra setup". But yea rebuilding calipers is the cheapest way to go. I bet its leaking aroung the handbrake mechanism....thats where my pass. side leaked from. Oh you could get rebuilt ones for about $120 (for both) after returning your core.

Thanks for the replies so far guys...

OK, here is how I fried my caliper:

Basically I was stupid. I sheared the pad material off one of the brake pads and I started to get a heck of a grinding noise from the brakes. But I figured that since the rear brakes don't do too much and it is still stopping fine I can keep driving it for a while. I must have overextended the piston causing the failure (have not verified but the driveway was full of brake fluid and the MC is empty).

Now I have a 15 m old son that rides in the car with me quite often so I really don't want to rebuild these calipers or even put reman calipers on it. and I still need rotors so that is why I am looking at the total brake kits so I will have new rotors, pads, calipers, lines all the way around the car.

But can I get away with jsut doing the rear cobra conversion now? I would think not as the added leverage in the back will really change the braking performance of the car...

Then if I am going to bother with it (and since my car is red) I am thinking the 10th anniversary red calipers would look the best. Stangsuspension has this kit for the whole car for $770 plus an additional $60 to upgrade to the SS brake lines (well worth it I think)...

Thoughts?

just remember M2300M is on national backorder right now in case you have plans to do it quickly....

I went with the 13 inch baer rear brake upgrade. I had both Cobra and this kit.

I like this kit better then cobra rear kit (Not much different then "GT" caliper kit...)

I paid around $250 comes with new "Eradispeed" rotors and bracket. Perfect for GT mustangs and uses same rear brackets. Looks better and performs better too. Go about 35-40 mph and "Pull" the E-brake to see what happens. It's fun :)

You will not be able to use baer kit with cobra rear brackets. You will need set of "GT" brackets. So if cobra owners want the 13"kit, You will have to get a set of "GT" brackets or you are screwed. :)
