Story is linked but I now have to get a whole new rear end. Ford just called and my rear end housing acually split in half at a weld holding the axle tube to the pumkin. Over $2k in damages, so now i'm going to put 3.73's in the rear and take out a loan just to do this all until I get reimbursed. This is rediculus, thanks a ton Indiana DOT.

Wow...but the axle tubes are not welded into the rear pumpkin from the factory But hey if someone welded them....dont say anything so the DOT cant say that your car was modified or something.

Hope it all goes well for ya!

There are plugs on each axle tube that hold the axle tube into the center section of the axle housing. Typically they can break allowing the axle tube to spin in place, it mainly happens in cars running on slicks. Those plugs are welded (not very well) to the axle housing. Chances are the axle tube spun when you had your incident.

I don't know if it was welds for sure, that is what the guy said on the phone that he could see oil seeping from the crack. They quoted me $1500 for a used axle which is outragous. So i'm on the lookout for a new rearend now.

I would prefer to have the axles, gears, etc. I know the internals are not right either, just based off of what is already broke.

Yea i would imagine so. Perfect time to upgrade, if you can afford it. It'll probably be as exp. or more to use factory replacement parts. IDK where you could find a prebuilt rear other than the factory. Thats why i just bought upgraded parts

You are going to need a 99=04 8.8 axle

The 94-98 versions are slightly narrower.

$1500 for a used axle is WAAAAY to high. I've seen Cobra IRS's sell for that much

I'm going to stick with a sra, I think, I went and took pictures of the car yesterday, and I couldn't find the crack but, I couldn't really get under the car either. Just looking at the axle tube though, I could tell it was pushed way up off of center. Also speed concepts has new axles on sell with FR 31 spine axles and diff, my choice of gear, and install kit for $1460 which I will def go this route if I can't find an axle soon.
