Installing a rear main seal, I have it in but I am wondering how critical the level/evenness is with the rear face of the block. Chiltons says .127mm or .005".... I'd assume flush with the face is good.... I have the level as close as I can get it, but its not "PERFECT". I did not use the tool, I used the old seal to tap in the new seal.....

I put in a TEFLON rear main seal on mine got in for 15 bucks at autozone. I put my rear main seal flush with the block, and it's working great, Don't forget thread sealant on the flexplate bolts.
I have the rear main seal in good now...... Unfortunatley I think the leak was really occuring below the seal at the oil pan, the rear gasket of the pan. It was hard to tell before but after being in there and cleaning it all up I can see things more clearly now.... Anybody have any luck sealing up the rear of the pan without completely redoing the pan gasket?

Well, you could have the engine out, and the transmission still in. Some of the old V8s had a two piece rear main seal that you could change with the transmission still in.
