I did this...and it only took one day and about 11hrs.....it looks great and sounds good.....i even put a cover over my speakers though...i'll get a pic and post it....

Since a couple of you have been wanting more pictures of my RSD (via PM) and i now have the car out of storage i took a few quick pictures that hopefully will help out. again if any more are required, just ask

No you didnt loose any weight, the mdf weighs more - at least in the vert. And putting to subs on a board is going to sound like crap, you need to build boxes into the rear panel. For the delete you did well and it looks good, however for the subs - people dont need to copy that, its simply not done properly

thank you for the one compliment, but:

1) i wasnt looking for weight reduction (that wasnt my primary goal)

2) i have not finished the back which would make it enclosed (did you read?)

3) it does not sound like crap. itll sound better with a back yes i agree. but it does NOT sound like crap

look man, im not trying to insult you here, but those are not free air subs... so you can A) damage them and B) they do not sound good (but used to build boxes for a living so maybe my ears are a little different than most peoples. I didnt see where you were going to back them, in that case get 'er done with a min of 1 cu foot and it will sound great, but make sure you secure the back board to not rattle, also you can go lowes and get cable and a lock, bolt the back board too the floor and the subs to the inside of the their boxes, (make sure also you build 2 separate boxes, not 1 big one, bc the phasing will make them reverberate. Looks like you could also externally mount the amp, however if it were my car Id mount it on the inside of the rear back baord and cover it. good luck

i am fully aware that non free-air subs can be damaged when not enclosed, thats why i dont have the amp cranked all the way up. i know its dangerous but i dont care. the subs came with the car

the whole thing that will need to be done is me remaking the RSD, which i already planned for while making it the first time

i am going to use most of the same procedures but with more of a sealed box concept idea in mind

some of the things i will be making sure of is to incorporate 1.25cu ft of air into each sub (recommended by infinity). 2 cu ft for porting, which i may do

the back will be formed to the trunk and things will be insulated

i wont get any net weight savings by the end but that isnt my primary goal

word of advice on your mdf... get small screws and mount your amp between your speakers... then drill a ground line into the bottom of the trunk. It will look about 100X cleaner .. ive seen a setup just like that and ita a hella difference.

Haven't read this whole thread so maybe this came up already...

If you're not using subs you should build those pieces out of foam board. It is available at any hardware store and comes in sizes like plywood. It is sturdy as well. I can easily put groceries or let the dog (20lbs) lay on the base piece without worry. It is also easier to cut and shape if you need to be modifying after the inital cut. Takes the felt/vinyl, or whatever you want to use with spray glue very good as well.

AND....it's SUPER LIGHT!

I built mine out of like 3/16" plywood and put some plush pep boys carpet on it. Strong enough for 2 chicks to sit on it. Weighs like 6 lbs. I know weight savings was not the OP original goal. Its not even screwed in. Just slipped in tightly. And never moves. Cost was about $20.

yeah guys there are so many way to do this. the actual RSD you would put in the back of your car is subjective depending on what you want. this write up was really intended for people to get an idea of how to go about it

anyone have any idea on how i can attach vinyl to the mdf other than staples? I tried the staples but there going through the wood and the material on the other side. Any glue or double sided tape you guys can recomend?

3M makes a spray adhesive that is often used to do this. But, you will want to prime the surface first. Prep work is key.

+1 on the 3M spray adhesive, and dont cheap out and buy some off brand because from experience, other spray adhesive does not hold as good.

Digging this back up.. RedDaemon how did you mount the bottom of the delete to the car? I know exactly where to attach the upper section but I haven't seen a great area to mount it to there. I am also really thinking about ripping out the trunk trim pieces and just put carpet on it.
