I would like to know as well. I've read people talking like it isn't hard at all, but I really don't know. Would like to find out.

There is a thread. Someone had sent it to me. It listed all the tools required and a video you could buy. It may be gone because of the crash a few months back.
It was cheeper and easier for me to buy it rebuilt from Astro Performance Warehouse. $650 included shipping.
Dont buy a used one from Seminole County Mustangs.

I don't know how you feel about the DYI thing when it comes to gears, some people don't like the idea of working on transmissions. If the DYI transmission fix idea isn't something that you would rather leave to someone else, here are some resources:

See http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/onlineorder/product.asp to download a FREE service manual for T5 or Tremec 3550
You will need the Adobe Acrobat viewer which is also a free download – http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

See http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ or http://www.ddperformance.com/index2.htm for parts

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

http://cartapes.com also has a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec. It costs less than $20, and is worth every penny of it.

I did a Tremec 3550 rebuild, and it wasn't that difficult. The video was an immense help, and I would recommend viewing it. At $20, it will give you an opportunity to look and decide for yourself if you think that it is something you want to try to do.

I did mine on a bench. Nothing really special required. Some people say you need a press but i managed perfectly fine only using a 3-jaw puller.

Just make sure you have a thin punch to drive out roll pins and a good set of inside or outside snap ring pliers. Other than that i used basic hald tools and had no problem.

Read up on the manual for some time before you begin and you'll do fine.

Please don't think I'm trying to hi-jack the thread (responses could be useful to others)...but, I rebuilt my T-5 a couple of years ago and the 3-4 blocker has gone south twice...any advice on what I need to do to solve this issue? When I rebuild the engine, I would like to fix this problem for the last time.

Thanks,
Jim

on world class, the 3-4 blocker is wraped in kevlar, where as it is all brass on the non world class. this may be your problem.

Rebuilding a T5 isn't too difficult. T5s tend to be the easiest of all manual trans to rebuild. Just take your time and keep everything in order.

Next, the term "World Class" is a fallacy. ALL T5 parts/trans from Ford are labeled as World Class. I rebuild and sell T5s everyday, but I have never seen any kevlar in a T5 that wasn't "built" to some type of pro specs. All OEM T5s(and most aftermarket) have brass blocker rings.

What sets a good T5 build apart from stock is checking tolerances. No excessive play or slack. Change all bearings and seals. Clean CLEAN CLEAN! Then clean somemore.

I sell an upgraded T5 rebuild kit also I sell carbon fiber synchros. Just take your time, prep everything and you should be fine.

Not true...not all T5's are "world class". Ford made some internal changes (carbon blocker rings, gear ratios, etc) in 86 I believe, and labeled them "world class". Fallacy, yes...theres nothing world class about any T5, but there are differences over the years and models.

Back on topic...I would definately recommend the Hanlon (cartapes) video. I've rebuilt my T5 numberous times, as well as a few others, and still refer back to that video every now and again. It's worth every bit of the $20 or less bucks it costs.

It's not hard to rebuild a T5, just keep the service manual handy...go step by step with the video, and keep everything in order and you'll be fine. The only "specialty" tool you'll need is an endplay gauge to shim the mainshaft. You might even be able to borrow one from AutoZone.

Good luck!
