Okay, so I've decided to rebuild a turbo block for my car (88 lx vert). I've already done the swap, I just want a fresh engine. Any recommendations? I'd like to supe it up a bit, but not too much. She's still only going to be a street beast. Any recommendations on brand of parts is welcome too.

EDIT: Sell many rebuilding kits for the 2.3T motors.

tealtiger, did you mean that link to be to Northern Auto Parts?

Anyway, the only thing I can say about the commercially available rebuild kits is don't get one that has pistons in it. They all come with hypereutectics which are junk in a turbo motor. You can usually reuse the stock pistons, otherwise get some quality aftermarket forged pistons.

Oh yeah, look into porting & polishing the head too. Biggest bottleneck on these engines.

"commercially availible" isn't really an issue with me. I just got a job at Competition Products. If you haven't heard of it, it's a mail order perfomance part company like Jegs and Summit. Check it out at http://www.competitionproducts.com The website is still under construction, but our tech guys are great. So anyway, back on topic. Yeah, I can get pretty much anything from any manufacturer for cheap.

Well what I was saying was that the "kits" they sell have crappy pistons.

Anyway, I just got all my stuff at Advance Auto Parts. Sealed Power rings & bearings, Fel-Pro gaskets. All good stuff. You might look into gapless rings if you can get them cheap, though.

What are your opinion on boring and stroking the engine? I know I've seen stroker kits (2.5, 2.7, 3.0?) on Esslinger's site.

Stroking...well, I suppose if you have a couple grand burning a hole in your pocket, go for it. I don't think the cost-to-power ratio of one of the stroker kits is very cost effective personally. You'd be better off spending $1000 on an aluminum head than $2000+ on a stroker kit.

As for boring it should only be done if absolutely necessary (deep scratches in the bores for example), and then, you can't go more than .030" over.

gotcha...so pretty much keep it stock is what it sounds like as far as internals go. What about head work though. Would it pay to rework that? I mean, port and polish is a definate, but what about something like putting in bigger valves?

Head work is a "must have" because the head is the biggest bottleneck in the whole engine, but big valves seem to be a bit of a tossup. A lot of people get them done, but then shrouding is usually even worse when you do go to a bigger valve, so I dunno. The stock valves in the turbo head are already pretty big as it is.
