Rebuilding my motor

My motor now had 206000 miles on it and Im starting to have some problems with it. It runs great but my oil pressure at cruising highway speeds is at 29 pounds and Im burning through a gallon of coolant everytime I drive one way to school (2 hour drive). Now my plan is to get a rebuild kit with 9.0:1 compression pistons, rebuild the heads as well as port and polish them for the hell of it, Port and Polish the intake, and throw in a mild cam. Replace all the bearings, rings, oil pump and throw in some new freeze plugs. Now will I see some decent gains from doing this? I ran a 14.4 with a stock motor at 195000 miles, does anyone think its possible to hit a 13.9 with the rebuilt motor? I was just wondering cause it would be kinda nice! :D Anybody have any suggestions about this project of mine? Thanks alot.

I'd check to see how much money is involved in rebuilding, polishing, and porting, your stock heads. It may be more cost effective to slap on an out of the box set of AFR 165s or TFS heads. As for your rebuild well.... 306, here we come. Get your crank cleaned up, get the best pistons, rods, and bearings you can afford and call around to a few cam companies and see what they recommend for your app. A nice set of brand new roller lifters, and roller rockers will help to wake things up as well. If you can afford it.... check into a complete stroked and prebalanced rotating assembly from CHP or DSS. They run around $1900 I believe. Keep in mind that you'll have to have the block prepped for the stroked crank. Get some nice big valve reliefes in those pistons and you will be able to run even larger valves than what's in the 165s.

I agree with Daggar, the aftermarket for the 5.0 is very resonable. For you to just port the heads and rebuild it a little better stock you could most likely afford new heads like AFR or TFS (Trick flow even makes 2 kits that come with heads, intake, cam etc) and a stroker kit from CHP or DSS for about the same or just over bore it 306. There is a cheaper way to get your block prepped for a stroker kit (i've priced it out at many different machine shops), DSS makes a level 10 and level 20 block, this blocks are over-bored .0300 and stroker ready, its an ultimate do it yourself project then. and the level 10 block which can handle more power then the stock block is $625, and a level 20 cnc block costs $925, the killer is to get your block all stroker ready, honed, bored out, new freeze plugs etc etc, costs you over a $1000 (if you dont believe me go to a good machine shop and ask them). That is why I'm going with a level 20 cnc block for when I rebuild my engine. So it sounds like you have some options, keep us posted on what you plan to do!

not bad research for a 16 year old :D

This has to be as cheap as I can make it. My dad is paying to get it bebuilt. I just need a reliable motor to get me back and forth from school for the next 3 years. My friend knows how to port and polish heads so he's gonna do that for me for free which is pretty cool as well as the intake. Im just going to go with a Summit Rebuild kit, re hone the cylinder walls. Im going to be doing all the assembly myself and with help from my friends uncle that has built many engines before. I can drop that much money into it, just enough to get the engine reliable.
Thanks,
Jesse
P.S. I'm a broke freshman in college with an addiction to my car.

You guys aren't listening to me lol I cant afford a 3000 dollar crate motor or a 1900 dollar stroker kit! I need to do this as cheap as possible.

Oh I see, sorry about that bro

I would just go with a summit racing engine rebuild kit then, if you just want to rebuild it mildly. Cam, rebuild kit, porting and polishing, sounds like a good plan since you can the porting for free. Go with that then, will this be your first rebuild?

If you want to be cheap on this and still have a fresh motor.

Have the crank journals cleand and polish, also check to see if you can still use standard crank bearing and not 10 over. This should cost more than 50.00 to 75.00. Well worth it tho. If you buy a kit with a new crank you still have to pop an aditional 150.00 or so to have it balanced. So leave the crank.

Call DSS, you can get a piston and rod set for about 699.00 VERY high quality. So for about 800.00 you'll have a freash short block with high quality rods and pistons, forged not to mention. As far as the rest of it goes, its a horse a peice. Their are many cams out there for 150.00 or. Keep your roller lifters, thats if yours are'nt all mard up or scored.

Like Dragger said tho on the heads you just might be better off with AFR or Trickflows for about the same price. There honestly isnt much gain on stock heads.

You could get high compression pistons from DSS too and get the HP that why too?

Theres manys ways to skin a cat just do your home work.

Sure will, my friends uncle who has a crap load of experience with motors may help me build it up. I'll keep you guys posted!

Sweet :nice: yes please keep us posted! I'm doing mine this spring, getting the level 20 CNC block then build it over the summer and drop it in my stang :D

this will be second rebuild, me and my dad rebuilt his 351w to a 408 with so many goodies for his 72 Gran Torino Fastback. It was also my dad's first time rebuilding an engine, we had a bunch of friends help us too, thats the best way! You'll love it and learn so much, I would recommend getting a ford shop manual and one of the HP book series on the how to rebuild a small block ford it takes you step by step, those books taught me so much!

Yes I agree, dont get a new crank IF YOU CAN, get it checked out by a machine shop magnafluxed, the whole deal, that'd be the worse thing to rebuild it all and screw up your car because it was warped or cracked etc. the DSS kit is 699.99 and I've heard so much about, that would be a badass deal, if you have the money. stock heads arent that good, but if thats what he has to deal with for now, he can always slap on better ones after college or down the road when he has the money.

Opps, Almost forgot the damn block. Now do not send it in! toss it to the bone yard or use it as a big paper weight. B&M Engine has bare blocks, full preped, and ready to go for 275.00 tolal, thats to your door. Can you beat that? I bought 3 so far. 2 for buddies and 1 for me. I have my 347 in one. I think not having to driiiiive tp the shop and drooop it off is cool, not to mention all the BS too. The only thing they didnt do was toqure plate.
