? regarding X pipe

YES! I know there have been at least a hundred threads already posted regarding X pipe ?'s...but they still dont help me. Hear me out will ya. :Zip2:

As you can see in my signature I have an American Thunder Cat back already installed...next on the 'ol to do list includes: SLP LT headers and the matching X pipe.

now, if I get the O/R....is it gonna be stupid loud and annoying with my AT flows? Obviously it will be louder w/o cats -I know this- and Ill get a lil more performance out of them--anyone know how much exactly next to the catted x?

ideally I would like to hear from some people who have the same setup that I would like to do or HAD that particular setup before, or know someone who does...

its a daily driver...if its gonna be stupid loud...Im just gonna get the catted SLP X.

lemme know what you guys think.

the slp headers wont make it any more loud. its the x pipe. in my opinion the o/r x pipe sounds like crap with flows. i used to have flows with bassani o/r x, hated it. as you can see i changed, but my setup is not loud. that is how i wanted it.....not loud.

anyway i just dont think you will like the sound of o/r with chambered muffs. it sucks

I had an O/R H-pipe with my Blowmasters, and it sounded like ass IMO. I switched to a catted X-pipe and it's much better sounding. Definitely less raspy, and sounds better when you stomp on it. Just my 2 cents, of course.

O/R mid pipes are too loud i think. im gonna be getting a catted prochamber.

O/R is about 3-4 times as loud LOL. My dad put my stock H back on to get it inspected. I cranked it up after I got home (it was/is on jacks right now) and WOW, it FREEGIN QUIET LOL. I can hardly hear it. O/R is ALOT louder.

I also don't care for the sound of an X pipe with flows..

H pipes sound best with chambered mufflers (flows, etc)
X pipes sound best with straight through mufflers (bassani, etc)

Regardless of what decision you make, you'll probably really enjoy the extra volume and rumble (and a nice raspy cackle with an X pipe) and enjoy the few ponies you get up top. It really is the midpipe that makes that evil Mustang sound we all love.

the SLP cats are big and round, and scrape like a mother. mine lasted about 3 months before getting a nice little pin-hole in it from being scraped and dented so many times. and i still have the stock suspension. get the o/r. cheaper and louder.

I guess not too many people like that loud sound. I myself had an O/R H with the American Thunder catback on my 96' GT and loved the sound! Now I have a buddy who has Flowtech LT's with an O/R X and the American Thunder catback, and I think it sounds great. Gives off a mean growl like a Mustang should. But, I have ridden in his backseat and you hear that sound all the time. I myself dont mind it. Depends on how loud you want it and if your cool with it being that loud. I think it gives off a nice deep sound, and is really mean when you get on it. I think O/R Mids with a Chambered catback sound great! I use to have Magnapacks with my O/R H and BBK LT's and it did not sound good. It wasnt deep, after 3 grand it gave off this tin metal sound and kind of just farted. Not a good sound, and I switched to the Magnaflow catback and it sounds a lot better! Its also very quiet in my car when I want it to be, and growls when I get on it. I am pleased with the sound, but still like my buddys setup as well with his O/R X and Flowmasters. I had already gone that route and wanted an all stainless steel catback, plus some bigger tips then they offer, I love my Magnaflow 3.5 inch tips. So I am happy with my setup. I say if you like it loud, then go with the O/R X and Flowmasters, you will be happy with the sound! It gives off a nice deep rumble and really screams at you when getting on it, since its chambered it doesnt give off the problem I had when I had my straighthrough Magnapacks. While I might be the minority on this, I believe it is a good sounding setup and really gives off that Mustang growl you may be looking for. Good luck with your choice!

Hey Whitepony04, thanks for the post. I have the same questions.

I want my stang to purrr nicely and roar at WOT. But I don't want it to piss me off on long hauls, or piss off my girl. I certainly don't want O/R catless. Stinking up the world is for track cars.

Question;

Is there a weld in solution for an X pipe that uses OEM cats? I'm just trying to get the results and save a few bucks!

Off-road pipes.. only way to go

here's a pic of my drivers side cat. lasted about 3-months on the stock suspension. that gouge is a result of continual scraping, and eventually it developed a small pin-hole. luckily, they are designed with a protective SS armor plate on the bottom side to protect the actual cat. this one still worked fine due to that plate, but i wanted to go O/R. this just shows you the abuse they take. you gotta be real careful going over bumps.

thanks to everyone for the feedback. I think Im gonna go with the catted X...seems like a better choice...anyday now Im gonna be requested to show up for emissions testing....dont wanna deal with the headache later.

thanks for the heads up helty about clearance..saw the pic...damnnn. LOL. and that was on STOCK suspension....Im gonna have to watch those bumps..plus there are speed bumps everywhere here in Chicago...gonna have to start taking alternative routes....damn mayor.

I had flowtech off road xpipe with flowmaster american thunder catback sounded so bad ass. Getting cats is waste of $200 IMO.

I agree, if you are worried about testing, you could always swap the stock pipe back in or get MIL's. In Chicago, where I am from as well, they only check your computer. If your not throwing a code, you should be good to go. I just think a catted pipe wont give you the Mustang growl you may want. But I also understand about the long trips and such, like I said my buddies car with the O/R X and Flowmasters can be heard inside loudly as well, but I love the sound either way. And the extra money for a catted pipe is another good reason too as Roger 4.6 pointed out. I think you can save that money and put it into another mod by going with the O/R pipe. I am lowered with LT's and havent had any problems in Chicago, just have to be careful and go over speed bumps real slow or at an angle.
