hey guys

Well my friend Jackie is looking at an 01 Mustang GT for about $7k. Obviously, thats a sweet deal. Heres the catch, it has 85k miles on it. The price is sweet, but the miles are crazy high for its age. She really wants it, but I told her to watch out and get it checked first. Her mechanic is going to take a look at it tomarrow or the next day. I told her to have him do a compression leak down test on the motor. Also, to have a carfax check done to check if its a lemon or has a salvage title. Its blue, hardtop, and an automatic.

So what do you guys say? Should she take it if everything checks out ok, or still pass it up??

I just dont want her to have the nightmare I went thru with my stang. Blown headgaskets 3 months after I buy it, ****ed up radiator, fan, waterpump, costing lots of cash and time. Im also gonna tell her to look into a warantee.

Thank!!

as long as theyve had oil/coolant changes on a regular basis, the mod motors can last for a long long time. just look at how many 92+ crown vics, grand marquis and town cars there are running around. ive driven crown vics at work that have 300k+ miles and they feel just as good as a new one. but definately get the car checked out by a mechanic first. pay close attention to the transmission, the 4r70w is great as long is it has fluid flushes early and often.

That's a personal choice. If it's well maintained, then it might be a great buy. You have to make a choice, this car or an older one with lower miles. Keep in mind that when the car goes over 100k, the value will drop like a rock. This goes with any car. I would say go for it, if she likes the newer cars, can only afford about this price and plans on keeping it for three years. At the end of three years, it will have about 130k (if she is an average driver) and still well maintained, might be worth $3k and you got your money worth. Chances are the seller is getting rid of it to avoid the 100k tumble.

These cars can last forever, but it is always a gamble.

The Crown Vic Taxis in NYC have the 4.6L and have regular maintenance on them. They have 250-300K miles and are doing fine. This seems to have a very good engine.

If its been well mantained i would say go for it if thats all she can afford. They are good motors . I had a guy come into work the othre day with a 97 f150 with the 4.6 had just turned 300k. Stil ran like new wuiet as a mouse. SO that should say something.

These motors are pretty solid. I would bet my bottom dollar that the transmission WILL NOT last much longer. I would go with the warranty
for that reason alone.
