Remove Charcoal Canister

No smog pump, still have EGR and still have charcoal canister. Wanting to get rid of canister. Canister has one line running into firewall in back passenger corner. Has a short one that has been capped off. Also has wires plugged into harness in fuel rail. Can I just pull the line from the fenderwell and unplug the harness at the fuel rail or am I going to be throwing a code?

Also if you are familiar with the EGR vaccum lines, why dont you check out my "Where do these lines go?" thread. You would be a lot of help to me. Thanks.

Know what does what before removing it. Remove or disable the wrong thing and the computer sets the check engine light and runs in "limp mode". Limp mode means reduced power and fuel economy.

Here's a book that will get you started with how the Ford electronic engine control or "computer" works.

Ford Fuel Injection & Electronic Engine Control 1988-1993 by James Probst :ISBN 0-8376-0301-3.

It's about $20 from Borders.com see http://www.amazon.com/ . Select boo...a.pvx?;item?item_no=M12071N302 1&comp=LRS for more details

Before you ditch the canister, you'll probably want to just disconnect the hose from it that goes to the fuel tank and make sure you can bare the smell of the gas fumes. Some people are fine with it disconnected, but others can't stand it. What's your reason for getting rid of the canister?

The smog stuff was removed by the prior owner. My reason is just wanting to clean up a little bit. Before I was under the misunderstanding that this was useless without the smog pump. Now I understand that it still vents the gas tank. For some reason my intake does not have the port to take in the outgoing canister line. I just capped it at the box, left the canister to accept any overflow, or vapors, and left the wire plugged in. I left it how it was basically, just capped it at the box instead of at the end of a two foot dangling line. I dont have catalytic converters to get clogged. Thanks for all of the help, especially the write up jrichker. Two threads answered really quickly. I love this place.

I have no other place to run the outgoing line. For some reason the port on the intake it should be run to is not on the underside. I dont know if it is because its a reproduction intake or what. The only other place I have open is the entrance to the pcv breather. It is hooked up to the pcv line, but it is a T port so one side is capped off. Its on the far upper drivers side of the intake. What do you think? I dont wanna tear something up. Thats why im going through all this stuff.

I don't know what kind of intake you have or how things could be moved around to have a dedicated port on the underside of the plenum.

I was simply stating that I would not plug that discharge line. :)

All you need to do is t it into a vacuum line on the manifold and problem solved.

Also, be sure you want to ditch the egr as well. There really isn't a benefit of removing it and it could lead to reduced fuel economy at cruise as well. It has zero imPact on horsepower
