K, I've got my delete pulley in, but haven't yanked anything out yet. Is it possible to start pulling out all the plumbing inside there and not worry about leaking stuff anywhere? My A/C hasn't worked for years now, and I just think that all the plumbing in there would leave a lot more room under my hood if it was just taken out. Thing is, I wouldn't be taking out the whole assembly from the bracket yet, and if i can, i'll want to do this with basic tools. Is this possible?

You should have a valve on the passenger side front in one of the a/c lines. Make sure the car is outside, then stick something in there to hold that valve open untill all pressure is gone. I just used my pocket knife. You will need A/C /Fuel line disconnect tools to remove the lines. You can get these from advance or auto zone, or I got mine from www.50resto.com. The A/C compressor and the canister on the firewall can be removed will regular tools.

Opening the valve on the one line will release all the pressure from that line, but the other line will still have some pressure on it so be carefull when removing it.

They have pretty high rewards for people to turn ya in too. Not saying thats gonna stop ya either but if you're gonna go that way atleast be discrete about it.

I hear ya, BUT to me since it is one of those things I would at least look into the legal way fiorst. May not cost you anything as they will get some free refrigerant.

Ok, I know this is a while later, but again, because of my procrastination, I haven't done any of this yet. Here we go

CAn someone give me a list of things I can rip out before the lines? Once these things are taken out....can I drive the car to a shop to get the lines pulled, or will the car be held up until it's all done?

Never had any idea this had such legality strapped to it. When we pulled my engine, my cousin hit the air nozzle thingy and there wasn't anything left in mine so we just took the lines off. Found out one of them was bent and cracked so it had leaked out. It did stink a little though.

To answer your question, from my experience, it's all connected in such a way so there's really nothing you can take out before hand without the pressure coming out.

if you dont plan on saving the lines and their all empty you can use a pipe cutter or a hack saw and jsut cut the lines

dont forget to remove the huge condensor infront of the radiator

doesnt matter

if the system is charged which like you said its very old and probably isnt, the system would have been loaded with r-134a which isnt ozone depleting. so releasing the system isnt a recommended practice but if you did its not going to kill anyone.

Alright, maybe I'm dumb, or maybe my question is misunderstood. I don't have the line removal tool. I'm wondering what I can rip out beforehand. I'll post some pictures, tell me if i can get rid of these peices with basic hand tools

I notice all kinds of plugs and wires here...this is why I'm a little confused to whether I can just jack it or not

You can just cut the lines and remove most of them now if you want to. Otherwise, there's not much that can be removed without the disconnect tools.

I started taking out lines and such, then with the complications of maneouvering the lines around things, I just decided to start cutting what i don't think i'll need....man i sure hope i'm cutting the right things...

Here's a problem...

These little metal things, placed around the connectors....are they there to prevent people from using line pullers on them? This a connection by the firewall, about to go inside the car...they're getting in the way of the wire disconnection tools...

And, how do i get that canister out?

We pulled those clips right off.. No problem for me. My cousin a mechanic just cut the lines too. But we made sure we did it so we would have the best ease and least expense to reinstall the unit. Just try to think in terms of that. I would need a new condensor (shot anyway) and hoses. I wouldn't buy new though if I ever changed my mind.

Yeah, those clips just pop off. After you get those lines off, the canister is held on by two or three bolts.

Thanks alot fella's...I tried to pull at those clips, but they didn't seem to wanna budge. Guess I'll just have to use more elbow grease and a little wd-40 to boot...
