are you staying drum brakes? if you are, just pull the swedged end out of the shoe, and compress the little tangs together and pull them from the backing plate
if your converting to discs, you'll need to remove the whole thing which entails the first part, and doing the same thing with the part of the cable that attaches to a fixture directly up and inboard of your mufflers, then they run up to a "splitter" directly under your ebrake handle...
also if your swapping to rear disc, you'll have to modify your ebrake handle, or swap one in from a 79-86 (manually adjustable) or possibly one out of an SN95
to tag along with the disc conversion, you'd also have to get different cables (M-2809A (2ea) and M-2810 fwd section)...I personally used SVO type (same thing as the part numbers above) cables from the local Advance Auto...same thing, and about $20 cheaper per pair.
