Had my car repainted back in 2000. Did a great job, but overspray on all the VIN stickers. Car was taken apart, but never thought to suggest to mask these.

Anyway to remove the paint without destroying the info on them?

5 are oversprayed. Bumpers, fenders, and hood. (I think I was the one who did the underside of the hood)

Any ideas?

Interesting challenge. Whatever you might try, I'd see if could practice with solvents on a VIN tag from/on a wrecking yard car.

Might get lucky if these have a clear plastic sheet over them. Could try scraping paint with fingernail to see if it comes off. I just used brake cleaner, carb cleaner, and laquer thinner on a 96 VIN tag and it doesn't etch the plastic laminate - not sure what these are like on an 88. Good luck.

Just use laquer thinner mike. The probelm you'll have is how hard the paint is.

You may might need a new set of them in the end.

Edit: Don't spray the laquer thinner on the tag. Soak a small spot on a rag and try wiping it to see if it'll come off without problems.

Try to scratch off the paint first, I've tried several ways to remove the overspray on those stickers with very little success, the solvents in the paint can desolve the print when sprayed on them.

I've removed paint from decals successfully with aerosol goof off graffiti remover.

It wasn't on a car, so before trying it, test somewhere safe.
