Pull the cable completely out from the top (speedometer end) and lube it as you put it back in.
If it's still noisy, that generally means the housing needs to be replaced

Thank you for this! I can try this…
I have to ask though… I already disconnected it from the VSS end of the cable and test drove. It was still making the noise. In theory, if it’s disconnected from the VSS side and still making the sound wouldn’t that eliminate the speedo cable in its entirety because it wasn’t spinning at all after being disconnected from the transmission? I would think the cable at that point was completely dead. That’s why I didn’t try disconnecting it from the speedometer / odometer side first.
Ok, just figured I’d ask if what I did makes sense before pulling the dash but I can certainly do this and see what happens. Always open to ideas and advice. Thank you!

Yes, maybe your bushings in the VSS itself are shot and it is what's making the noise
Not common but does happen
You can lube up that VSS inside with some spray grease
Usually, they leak a small amount of trans fluid inside and they never need lube

Ok I will get on this. Easy enough to try.
I appreciate you following up for me!

I’m pretty sure it is supposed to be dry graphite but I could be wrong.

Finally the weather was nice and time allowed me to do the cable lube job today. It was worth the try but she’s still acting up. This is puzzling. Thanks for that suggestion @manicmechanic007

Separately, I picked up a new starter motor. No issues with it, just for preventive maintenance. My current one looks original so I’m on borrowed time.
Holy bat man that top bolt! Took me an hour just to find it! Even with the P/S tire removed it’s not visible at all. Had to feel around thru the K-member. Didn’t try the install today, just started the planning. I think this is gonna be a doozie unless I’m missing something.
As for the noise I will just keep the windows down for now. lol

That generally means the housing is worn
Replace the housing for the cable if you can still find one
