Replacing Flexplate on 65? Without removing engine or tranny?

Is it possible to replace the flexplate on a 65 (it is an automatic) without removing the engine or the transmission?

I am looking at buying this one and am told the flexplate rattles (is this some other problem possibly?). They have a new flexplate to put in but I will need to do it.

Is it possible to drive with a loose flex plate? He said he drove it about 15 miles. I want to drive it about 100 to get it to my home but don't think that is doable with this loose flex plate.

I would tow it home and remove the transmission to replace the Flexplate. A cracked or loose Flexplate will often sound like a rod knock. What kind of noise is it making?

No, the transmission must be removed to replace the flex plate. It is sandwiched in between the engine and transmission, and the flywheel bolts are accessible only with the transmission removed.

Dang, I was told you could just slide the tranny over unbolt the old one and slide the new flexpate.

You might be able to get it back far enough. We just did the same thing on a van of ours that needed to have it replace. Of course there was more room to move back though. Never tried it on the stang.


BTW, april 1st is long gone and I doubt you fooled too many with the lame ass upside down pictures.

Once you have the transmission to the point that you can "slide it over", you have removed it. At that point it'd be more dangerous to try and leave it in the car.

By the time you "slide the tranny over" it might as well be completely removed. That way you can torque the flex plate bolts down properly. 75 foot pounds.

Don't forget thread sealer on the crankshaft bolts, or you will likely have a small annoying oil leak that masquerades as a rear main seal leak.

I should of added that I would just pull it out if you got it to that point. The van was a whole different kind of mess to try and get it out. LOL
