Replacing PCV valve.

I'm doing some stuff to my stang for a tune-up and one is replacing the PCV vavle/grommet/screen but I can't really get to is... I've tried searching and all I've found was to climb up on the engine and to take the hood off...

Is it stupid to remove the upper manifold to get it off? Or should I take the hood off?

If removing the hood is easier for you than using a little step stool or leaning across the engine, then do it. Otherwise, just lean across the engine. The whole parts swap takes a minute or so.

just kinda lay across the engine bay and do it by feel, as it's kinda hard to see. Thats what i did.

Thanks for the replies guys. Hopefully I can get it with just some bars holding the hood up further and leaning over it. While looking for it I just had the hood rod thing holding up so I couldn't really get back there...

That should work. If you have a telescoping mirror, that can help you find it. Or if you get up on the motor so that your chin is at the back edge of the upper intake, you should see it.

I wonder about whoever said to remove the hood - that is kinda strange.

Yea you dont need to remove the hood or really the upper intake but i guess if u got REALLY big hands or something i guess u might have to. I can change mine in about a minute in and out without looking, just all by feel. If it helps and u can find the pcv line that hooks right into the driver side (rear of the upper intake underneath) you will see the line going into the intake so just follow it to see where it leads to go into the lower intake. Good luck BTW just use the stock hood prop, i doubt youll need it to go any higher

I just stand on the passenger side of the car and use my left hand and reach down in there. A hard vacuum line took a nice peice of skin off of the top of my hand, I couldn't believe that. Come to think of it most of the scars on my hand are either from under the hood of a Mustang or punching something when I get mad from working on one....well j/k about that one...

The PCV is on the lower intake directly behind where the upper meets the lower. Stick your hand in that spot, and when you feel a thick rubber hose, grab it and pull it out. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Another trick is to surf Ebay and find a pic of a lower intake, the big hole dead center at the back of the intake is where it goes. I had trouble finding mine too, when i looked at a pic, it was plain as day. Made me feel kinda dumd too.

Yeah I just changed my PCV and it was a PITA...

Ford really designed that poorly.

Just stick your hand down into the spaghetti of wires behind the intake manifold, PCV pulls out pretty easily.

If you can clean off the PCV screen thats down in the hole.

Magnet might help...but i coculdnt get mine out so I just wrapped a rag around my finger and wiped it off.

I've looked at Napa and AutoZone out here and even the Ford place and the Ford guy was a dick and no one has them... At AutoZone their computer listen the grommet as the same part number as the valve and didn't even show the screen.

I want to replace these with all new parts 'cause I doubt they've ever been replaced and I would like to do it all at once so I'm not back there in three months replacing another part.

I like your thinking - do it once and forget it for a couple years.

One can get a Motormite grommet at CSK. Peeps have said they got screens at parts stores too, but the parts stores here could not find the part. I got the valve, screen and grommet from the dealer for about 20 bucks.

I would use a Motorcraft valve, as some aftermarket valves dont fit too well in the grommet. LRS has decent prices on all three if all else fails (the shipping is offset by the discount compared to what my local dealer charged me).
