Reverse Pops out of gear

I just purchased a 2000 GT. I am having a small problem with the transmission popping out of reverse. It usually happens right as I am releasing the clutch. Has anybody else seen this problem, and if so do they know how to fix it? Is it just a linkage adjustment or something more serious? Though maybe Ford might have released a bulletin on the problem. I have had some success in preventing this by double clutching, but it is still a nuisance.

hmm.. I believe there was a TSB for it popping out of 2nd gear, not sure about the years or the exact info on this, does it have any mods on it? like a sts?

No, it is completely stock. A friend of mine just built a Cobra kit car with a 00 GT drivetrain and is having the same issue. He has a sts installed, not sure which one though. My feeling is it is just an issue of it not seating in gear completely unless you really torque it in hard (hence why I thought it just might be a linkage adjustment).

You're right, it is not seating in gear all the way. My '98 does the same thing. You just need to get a feel for it going into gear all the way. If it makes a definete stop, then you are in. If it feels kindof spongy and doesn't feel like the shifter's all the way down, then put in neutral, let out the clutch, push it back in, put it in first, then back in reverse. Sounds like a lot to do, but after awhile you get the hang of it.

need tranny rebuild.
Agreed - the reverse gear is shot, or at least, needs deburred. It's currently not engaging fully, allowing itself to pop out. We went thru the same thing for a while with my wife's 01, then had it rebuilt. Problem solved. I'd definatelt be sure that you point out this problem to the trannie shop to be sure they pay attention to this particular gear.
