Reving your 289's

me and a bud both have classic stangs and both have some motor (i got 65 auto and he has 66 stick)

he revs way higher then me when driving. whats different between us to?

same carbs

Anyways, I shift it normally at around 2000-2400 rpm, and when driving a little more agressivly, I wind it up to about 4k.

This is on a 3 speed manual.

if i get to 4k, im runnin on all 4 barrells with the pedal to the floor at abuot 75 to 80 mph

Nailing it from idle, your tranny shifts before you hit 4k?

i would say the difference is auto vs. stick..there is a big difference between shift points

I rev my 289 to 6000. I just have to manually shift gears or else the tranny will shift itself at 4000.

Besides the cam, are the internals just regular stock C or A code? Or is that a K code block, which has beefed up internals?

I don't want to insult your intelligence, but do you know about torque converters? They determine shift rpms for automatics. I'm not completely sure but there might be some other ways of manipulating to tranny to get it to shift at higher rpms, like a shift kit.

actually the torque converter has nothing to do with when the trans shifts, it is the governor and the valve body programing along with the throttle position(that is the kickdown cable or rod connected to the carb) that determines when an automatic trans shifts. you can manually hold 1st and second gear if you choose, but reprograming the valve body is the best way to go for the street.

C code 289, block bored 0.030", stock crank, rods, 0.030" pistons, and a full balancing.

my 289 turned like...6500 all day...but it was a k code and had solid lifters. my first 289 revved about 5200ish then power dropped, and that was stock a code with a fresh rebuild. both has 4 speeds though.

I've also seen that the vacuum modulator on the c-4 may need some adjustment or replacement. The engine vacuum has a lot to do with shift rpm.
