Hope this doesn't get closed because its not meant to be about street racing....

But lets have a discussion about racing from a roll vs. racing from a dead stop. Let me make a few points though...1) I understand drag racing is about both the car and driver.....2) Most of the threads seem to make the conclusion that they can beat a certain car.

Now...if you're racing from a roll and you happen to catch that car in a dead rpm range.....HTF do you think your car is better than theirs. Maybe its just me, but I don't really see people bragging about being better drivers, they brag about their car being faster/quicker. Total BS I think. Example....an SS is faster than a stock GT...don't know how you can argue that one...if you win, its not cuz your car was better....

well from a roll you have to know where you can downshift into your cars power band and things like that it dont take much skill to roll race so i think its pointless................but form a dead stop thats your car and the driver all together yeah you can have a faster car but if you miss a shift there goes your race and the slower car wins.....

Each form requires driver skill...you cant just mash the gas and go in either from.

Here is what I dont like about stop racing on the STREET. (LOVE it at the track)
NOONE HAS ANY TRACTION...all its proving is who hooks up the best. As in who shelled out the $$$ for the DRs.

Most drivers SUCK from a stop (no im not one of them) ...its too easy to beat faster cars as they have more traction problems. (iv pulled cars on a 400RWHP vette with my 292RWHP GT from a stop)...
its satisfying, but I KNOW my car isnt faster. I just out drove him.
When I race someone I want to see whos CAR is faster, not whos the better driver....thats what the track is for. It supplies great traction and its easier to launch the car...plus a REAL winner with defined endings. Track gives a great mix of driver skill and the cars power. ET shows skill mainly...trap shows cars power.

From what I can tell, people like to run from a stop on the street because their car is slow. Thats not always the case, but when I was stock I loved the stop light action because thats the only time I could waste anything fast :rlaugh: . As the car got faster I didnt like it as much....but I still wasnt scared to do it.

IMHO if your too scared to NOT do one or the other, then your the pansy. If you have a fast car and can drive then it doesnt matter. You should win either way.

+1

I totally agree. Speaking from experience, I know my car will not perform even close to its potential when racing from a dig on the street, especially on my street tires. And me doing a burnout on the street to heat the tires is begging for even more trouble, thus totally out of the question. Street racing happens so quickly. You're more likely to have an encounter with someone while moving.

FINALLY someone has qouted my thoughts into a couple paragraphs....i see NO need what so ever to race from a dig on the streets....everytime i race from a dig i spin through 1st and 2nd and bark 3rd....when i run from a 1st gear roll thats when the matching of cars NOT DRIVERS comes in.....honestly i could care less if someone drives better than me i know im not the best driver but i am pretty good. I put all my hard work into my car and i want to see who has the superior car NOT DRIVER....save the digs for the track, but when i want to see which car is faster i will run from a 20 or so roll....i do run people from digs and beat them...but i dont care how good i drive i want to see the cars line up...not the people....Call me a :taco: all you want but when it comes to the street I get no traction watsoever so its pointless to roast my street tires off when i could save the rubber for the track...roll is the way to go on the streets IMHO

did you just say u can't prove that an SS is faster than a stock GT? what's your logic again? that u might be at the wrong rpm from a roll? it's called downshifting....

If you were talking about my post....I didn't mean that I couldn't prove an SS was faster, I meant that it would be hard to argue that the SS is a slower car.

And yeah, downshift if you're rolling, I know that....but depending on the roll speed, it puts different cars in different power bands. You can't always downshift enough to put you in the power band. Or am I wrong, is it possible to downshift to any given gear at any given speed to be at a strong power point? Always seemed like when I had my stang, if I was at 15-20, a little too fast to get much left out of 1st, but too slow to get a great start from 2nd.

You're referring to this kind of thing.

I know that all auto LS1's have a dead spot between 25-30mph where the car wont drop a gear if they stomp it and isnt high enough in the RPM's to produce the power it should... ive seen this several times with a few friends of mine and its true..... i would imagine an SS would be the same... so if you go from a 25-30 roll you should get a nice jump on him, even though he most likely will catch back up to you.. but it will be a more respectable way to lose!!!...... just dont tell him its his dead spot!!!!

Even in roll racing you can't know who's car is faster. You could start from the other car's dead spot. Or yours.

Case in point about roll racing:

I ran against a car with 390HP/330TQ (according to Maseratir). He'd already beat me a few times so it was just a fun thing to do. Anyway, I was in 3rd gear at about 40. I gassed it to show him I was ready to go and he downshifted and waited for me to hit it. When I did I gained a car length on him and he actually had to downshift another gear to catch up. He did blow past me easily after that.

From a stop at a track he would have beat me BAD.

roll racing = check book racing Cause we all know speed cost $ how fast can you afford to go.

Dig racing on street = Driver who can actaully DRIVE their car. I've watched first hand cars launch on the street on the rear bumper so if you can't hook you need to work on it your street launch.

Now having said that they both have their advantages and when out in isolated areas, both forms are good. As a general rule when we have our lil get togethers we'll do 2 races 1 from a dig and one from a roll. IF the same car wins both times we all know what's up. IF a car only wins one or the other that also shows everyone what's up.

Now for the powerband ? with a stock cam 2v with 4.10's and a 26" tire trying to match up against a 4v car with stock gears and 26" - 28" tires it is a royal pain one car or the other is in the sweet spot leaving the other holding thier ankles.
