I'm putting in a TFS stage 1 cam tomorow, in my 91 5 oh, and I have one quick question. Do I have to lube the entire camshaft (all lobes and bearing surfaces) like in a flat tappet?
Either lube it or dip it in oil before you install it. Also go to the hardware store and get a really long bolt (with the correct threads) that you can use as a cam install tool.
I lubed mine with some white lithium grease and slid it in. It'll dissolve into the oil once you get some oil pressure going. I did put it on everything, but it was probably overkill, since it got oiled when I primed my oilpump anyway.
I just used assemly lube. At least put oil on it, I wouldn't feel good knowing I was going to start the car without lubing it, even if I did prime it (which I did.)
I beg to differ than you guys. The ford racing prelube says specifically DO NOT use on roller cam and lifters. Flat tappet YES. I always oiiled up the lifters good with motor oil and then the oil dripping off them will get on the cam as you rotate the crank during rocker adjustment
I agree with just plain engine oil... No break in needed for a roller cam. Prime the oil pump before cranking the engine... I use an old dizzy (removed gear) and a real STRONG drill clamped to the other end of the shaft...
