Anything north of the standard optioned GT has always been wasted on the guy the really would drive it for its' intended purpose.
Which one of you in your late 20's to 40 has the disposable income to either make a 700.00+ a month payment, or come off of 50+ grand to drive a factory built race car.........................

Some crusty old raisin that thinks I give a s hit when he brings it to a cruise night, or some hag smokin' a cigarette with the windows rolled up flying down the interstate late for her sales call.
Shelby, Saleen, Roush, COPO, Z-28, Z06, ZL-1 are all names/numbers that were never intended for someone w/ kids, a mortgage, and an hourly wage.
Uh, there are younger folks who have done well for themselves who can afford a car like that on top of a family, mortgage, etc. Not the typical person, sure, but that wasn't your argument either.
I'm NOT a millionaire, and in about February of 08 I allllmost pulled the trigger on a brand new GT 500. I've loved Shelby since I was a kid in the 80's. I spent hours drooling over 60's Shelbys in magazines. What kept me from doing it was I'd just purchased a new truck and I would have had to sell it at a loss. The payment would've been the same and I would've bought an old truck for hauling/towing... I just couldn't justify losing on a trade in. Fortunately, the bug passed. A co-worker of mine has a 2010 and it is nice. I have to avoid it like the plague to avoid the "wants" though.

The average hourly wage a-hole has to decide if he wants to make payments or repairs. Keep fixing my old piece of sht or make payments on a new car that will be a piece of sht in 3 years and have 3 more years left to pay. It's a no win unless you're a young person who's "done good in life." As for me, I liken it to the guy/girl that gets all gaah-gaah over a celebrity.
They're just people, that happen to make 60 million dollars over the course of the summer.

Not a reasonable assumption. I think you're not used to hanging out with the crowd of guys that can afford it. There are a lot, A LOT, of people out there that this is chump change to. The problem is that anyone who answers this becomes and instant douche-bag. I guess I'm a douche-bag. The money is there... the priorities are elsewhere. I'll probably still end up dropping another 20+ in my fox through the years, though. But then again I don't have kids or a wife to support, or a mortgage, and I've always lived well below my means and even had several deployments where I didn't spend more than a grand all year long. I can say that just about any single Captain could do it and they probably could on top of supporting a family.
Depending on your driving, and investment in traction, I would have to say the powerful cars all depend on the driver's behind the wheel. I wrecked my GT, and its mods cant amount to more than 400 hp at the wheels. Does that mean I cant handle it, or its too much HP for the street? I would say no. Did I make a poor choice and take it out in the rain with street radials, why yes I did. Ask the average guy in a GT500 if he thinks hwy pulls from 3rd gear are a "waste" of the HP his car has... Its perfectly streetable, if you dont get caught.
