I just came back from a test drive of a new GT. Nice.
The one thing that bugged me was that the revs did not seem to drop between shifts. I own 3 other stick shifts (including an '87 5.0) and don't experience that with them.
I can't buy that "drive by wire" is the reason. Drive by wire can be anything that's programmed. If it doesn't bug you, fine. But I happen to like a bit more response.
buy a tuner (like SCT XCAL2) from a good company, use the tuner to load the tune to your car and enjoy. for about $400, its the best mod you can do to your S197.
you can visit some of the SCT tuners websites. brenspeed.com, bamachips.com, etc. another alternative to the SCT tuner is the diablosport predator. i dont have one, so i dont know who makes tunes for them.

Yes Sir it is the way they are stock. It has to do with polution control, by burning up a bit more gas before it goes out the exhuast. I tuned it out with my SCT X cal 2. It wont bother you after you tune to a 93 octane tune like I have on my 07 GT.
I run a Brenspeed Tune and have a C&L CAI with Pypes axel backs. Best time on stock street tires and 15 lbs of air in them was 12.94 at 110mph. But I normally run in the low 13's. You'll love it!

When downshifting, yes. It's good to rev the engine to where the RPMs will be after you release the clutch in the lower gear. That's what "heal and toe" shifting if for. You blip the throttle to get the revs up - "rev matching".
However when upshifting, you (or at least I) want the RPMs to fall naturally (and quickly) to where they'll be when the higher gear is engaged.
