Rub a dub dub

Just brought home my first mustang today, its an 87 X highway patrol.

The guy I bought it from didnt have it very long, and said the only thing that really needs to be fixed is the rubbing issue with the front tires.
They are 255 tires and when your going straight, you can hear a slight humming, and it goes away when you turn slightly to the left, but gets worse when to the right. Also, if say I 'm getting on the freeway, going right, and I hit the brakes while its rubbing, it still stop till I let off the brakes

Is it just the tires that are too wide, or is it something else?

no, the tires arent toowide, cause i have 225 50 16's on my lowered gt, and they dont come close to rubbung.... try getting the alignment done, also, check those front tires to see any unusual wearing on them, sorry i couldn't be of any more help.

255's are way too wide for a 7" rim if you are still running the 15x7 10-holes.

255's are a wide tire for the front of an '87 as well. I have rubbing problems with 235/45/17's in the front of my '88. SOme guys get away with 245's.

87-90's have smaller fenders than the 91-93 Mustangs.

i run 245's and barely have rubbing issues at all, but i run a 9inch rim

They are 17x9 Cobras

You think it could still be a wheel bearing? Would I need to replace it, or could I get away with repacking it?

For the cost of a new inner/outer/seal I would not hesitate to replace..as long as there's no damage marks on the races in the rotor leave em be. Silly to go through all the hastle of repacking and not spending the extra 30$$.Make sure to check the wheel/tire for play as well. Almost forgot...nice lookin ride, hope she treats you well.

I run 255s on 17x8 wheels on my 85gt which has smaller wheel wells than any of yalls and have no rubbing. And Im dropped about an inch with fms C springs...
Wheel bearings sound like good place to start.

weill, you could probably try eliminating things b4 taking it apart by first looking at the wheel and tire combo, those tires, I think are too wide.. you could probably look under the car and see if anything rubs..

I was going to say the same thing. I had the same exact problem on my '79 Cobra earlier this season (even though I had rebuilt the ENTIRE front end in April of '04.) It turned out to be the outer wheel bearing on the passenger side. I was a little disappointed that it didn't last but 8,000 miles, but I caught it in time before there was great damage. I think I replaced it for less than $20.00.

Well i really meant 255 is too wide for the front.

Out back you can fit wider. I'm planning on squeezing some 275's under the rear of my car.

Thanks for the comments on the car, I've been looking for almost a year for the right notch, and I found this one on autotrader, called him at 10 in the morning and found out it was the first day it was on their And I get compliments from everybody about the white on white!

The wheels up front are 17x9 with 255/40, in addition to the humming noise, whenever I turn full lock either way, the tires rub really bad, does anyone else have this problem with this tire/wheel size combo?

She's been good to me so far, lost only one race, and to my boss of all people He has a 99 L that has all the bolt ons(minus upper intake + tb) but has those parts on the way after we ran and I lost by 1.5 cars

Welllllllllllll... Considering his car is converted to a 5 lug setup... If it's an SN-95 swap.. they have no wheel bearings. THey have hubs. If it was done with just a rotor/drum/axle swap, then yes.. it could be a wheel bearing.. Just food for thought.

hey s***head-i mean poopdawg, SN's DO indeed have bearings, they are integrated into the hubs, they just aren't user serviceable, and I promise you they can and will make noise if they are worn...speaking from personal experience
