Running a flaming river manual rack on a street/strip car

I am wondering how bad it would be to delete the ps and run a flaming river rack and pinion on a street/strip car that does get driven quite a bit on the street. I did a search yes, but I really wanna know how is the turning effort. What about if you quickly have to swerve to miss something in the road. Will these be fine. Thanx for thehelp.

It is very smooth and nice, if your going with a manual sterring set-up it the only way to go...

I think I am going ot be going with a more drag oriented suspension. Probably 4cly springs or stock ones, because I am getting spnsered with a company with suspension parts, so It will hook like crazy, so I fig. I would do the rest of the car. So what about daily driving with it?

I drive mine mostly on the street (for now) and dont mind it one bit. There is more resistance there obviously, but not bad. I ran mine with 225/55/16 and with skinnies, not much difference between the two that I noticed.

not being a prick here, but cars didnt always have PS. I think the only time it sucks is when you're sitting still and have to crank the wheel, but even then it's not all that crappy.

I too plan on deleting the PS and going with a Flaming River manual rack. No big deal to me since I grew up on cars that had only manual steering boxes. Gotta love old 'stangs.

Dont get the quick ratio box like my friend did. Hes a strong guy but he didnt seem to have fun driving it. I'd say stick with the power steering because your going to get tired of the manual. Besides, your really not getting much out of losing a great luxury.

Hey guys I am doing this today what belt size are you guys using. Are you guys just running the alt,water pump and crank pulley

my notch has soemthing like that...and is driven daily weather permitting

not running in any classes yet, a friends shop is using my stang for thier suspension parts, lower control arms, uppers, tq boxes and sub frames. They are making all these and are putting them on my car to use for the All Ford National show at Carlise, PA, for now that is, until I get money and see if I wanna take the car full out

oh yes....the sponser is UMI Performance

There is a trick to any car without power steering. You dont sit still and crank the wheel. You roll just a tad and the wheel turns easily. Not a big deal. Mom and pop had 2 econo boxes as a kid. Neither had PS. I never even missed it becasue of what I just told you.

I took the PS off my drag car because it scared the crap out of me with skinnies!

Yes, very true...when you start to go fast the manual steering is much more stable on the top end....

Yeah, if anything, you have MORE control for swerving out of the way from something in the road. It's very firm and precise. Only at a dead stop is it tough to steer. Turning a corner while rolling takes two hands, but isn't hard. When cruizing down the road in a straight line, or turning slight turns, you can't even tell it's not power steering.
The benifits? Weight reduction, less drag on the belt (frees up a few horses), no more leaks and/or annoying pump whine.

P.S. GroverDill.... I wish the top of my car looked half as good as the bottom of yours!!!

I was trying to figure out why you were putting SSM's lowers on when you mention UMI was going to sponser you with control arms, etc....

:worship: Damn, I love it when Groverdill posts pics! You could eat off any inch of that car- that thing is amazing!

About getting the car rolling before cranking the wheel and how hard it is to turn them at a standstill- why would anyone do that to thier tires? The car should ALWAYS be moving before you turn the wheels, despite how your Grandparents drive. If the only time you'll miss the power rack is when you are brutally raping your tires in a parking lot because you don't have the skills to get into a parking spot without doing a four point turn, it serves you right.
