s-trim and sd?

I don't necessarily agree. Take the cost of the T-5 itself, bell housing, aftermarket shifter (since we all know the stock one is crap), pedals, clutch, fork, cables and you'll see that you're likely to spend more on the 5-speed swap.

You can have an AOD build with a good converter pretty reasonably. And as fun as the 5-speed might be, you'll never see the consistency at the track that you would out of a well preped auto.

You could buy everything used for a T-5 swap, put new synchros in said used T-5 and be going for well under $1,000 pretty easily.

What does it cost to go through and rebuild an AOD, add a stall convertor, shift kit and some kind of cooler? Not trying to be an ass, I'm actually curious.

The rebuild parts themselves are cheap....it's the labor that gets you (just as it would with any transmission build....auto or standard). And since you're quoting used parts for the T5 conversion, why couldn't you do the same with the AOD? I mean, the most expensive part of the build is probably the Converter and there are tons of used ones floating around out there.

You could buy most of the basic rebuild parts (clutches, seals, gaskets) for around $250-$350.....if you want to get a little more serious with the build (manual valve bodies, scatter shields, etc), parts will get expensive from there. Just as it would with heavier duty built 5-speed conversions (hardened gear sets, clusters, heavy duty clutch, etc...) In the end though, you still don't have to go through the trouble of installing a host of conversion parts into the mix when working with the AOD, because the car is already set up to utilize that drive train configuration.

The only real additional feature I might recommend is an aftermarket stack plate style transmission cooler....which can be bought and installed for under $100.

So you see, they’re really very close in over all cost. There are trade off from both perspectives. Fun factor for the AOD and consistency for the 5-gear.

WOW, I didn't realize that a shift kit and tranny cooler where so expensive. I got both of mine for the same cost as a pro 5.0 shifter. If you take two identically prepped cars do a clutch and shifter and 4.10s in one. Do a shift kit and converter with 4.10s in the other. You would have close to the same money and you will not walk away from the aod car.

You can get a master overhaul kit with alto reds for 200 or less.
transgo shift kit is 120
TCI stall for 350
Big ass B&M super cooler is 100
Hardened input shaft is 200
You don't haft to have a hardened shaft or the expensive shift kit(but it is better) You can get a factory type master rebuild kit for $100. I picked the pricier items and stayed under your $1000.

For the price of that blower if it's in good shape I'd have it sitting in a box in the back of my room if you thought you needed to focus more on other things first, provided you could still pay for paint and whatnot. Do a little work to the tranny and you probably won't even want a 5 speed swap. If you do do a 5 speed swap down the road forget about a t5. My t5's days have been numbered even before I put the spray on the car.

As for h/c/i, imo while people can run good times with iron heads, aluminums are worth the savings. Lighter, flow more out of the box, more room to upgrade, and you'll at least get something out of them if you sell em.

My guess is because it's a lot of unnecessary work for nothing and he's probably going to get stuck financing the project and doing most of the work. It’s no where near a priority, especially for a guy who doesn't have a job. I’d listen to your old man if I were you. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Save the mods till you've got a steady income coming in.

But...since you're a kid, you probably won't listen to reason (since that's pretty much par for the course with "know it all teenagers") so feel free to do what you like. :)

ryan, why is your dad being so anal about the 5 speed crap. why doesnt it matter to him.

We've had alot of mustangs in our family.
IMO from driving them all, a 5 speed is much more dangerous than an automatic for a young driver.
Besides, you have to add tire and clutch money to the cars yearly allowance.

If when i was 17, i had an auto, i wouldn't of burned out 4 sets of rear tires in the first year.

so? let him pay for them and find out himself!! I have payed for 3 of my foxes in cash with no help, and modded em, new tires/engines and so on, and im still in hs. I say if he wants a 5 speed do the swap, if your dad will let you get a vortech instead of the 5speed, he is way crazy!!

I guess you missed the part about him having no job and no income, huh? How exactly would you suggest he finances this little project? McDonalds coupons?

Ryan,

I don't mean to be an a$$ but quit wasting everyones time. If you don't have the means to buy a Supercharger you shouldn't even be asking the question :nonono: .

Just last week you were complaining about how you could barely afford gas and now you are thinking about a Supercharger  ?

i got a job now so thats not my worry.

so far i have payed for everything on my car. i borrowed 1,500 from my dad in april to buy the car. then when the sc sold i paid him back....i have like 300 bucks left so its time to get a job.

so far none has helped me do anything..only thing i have payed someone to do was the top becasue i didnt want to chance ripping it or not getting it on right..

my dad just shook his head and said do what you want. but your not putting a 5 speed in it...so that leaves the doors wide open for me.

He says do what you want b/c he knows you can't afford anything. My dad told me the same thing, but now when I have money he is like " oh crap, my sons car is gonna be a bad mutha f'er" :D

Just bought a brand new t-5 from jegs (my other one was shot.. i wanted to get it rebuilt, but the tranny shop wanted 1200 for a rebuild... i said **** it because for 200 more i could just get a brand new tranny and call it a ****in day)... dude ****in raped me for parts and labor... needed a brand new clutch because the tranny was cocked wrong (which is why second gear was thrashed) which caused tranny fluid to leak all over the clutch and all that terrible ****... it was such a sad sight. i was too much of a chicken **** to do it myself. but i got my old tranny back - i'm gonna rebuild it piece by piece and sell it on ebay. it'll take me a million years though - i ****in suck with puzzles :(. anyone know any tutorials about rebuilding tranny's?

Edit: the total job cost me 2400.. ****ing KILLED me. i'm in enough debt with this car to last me a lifetime :(
