Saleen Series IV Blower swap

I recently came across a deal where I could possibly get the blower off a Saleen S281 in a straight across trade for cheap.

He is trading in his car for another Saleen and tentatively wants $1,000 for his Series IV (Whipple / Lysholm) if I give him my intake manifold, etc in a straight across swap.

So, what do you guys think?

I imagine I'd be making 330rwhp - 350rwhp MAX with a safe tune and my current set of mods. My biggest concern is getting it running correctly directly after the swap, and getting the car tuned.

I have a Diablo Predator tuner and most of the local shops use SCT to tune, so I might need to contact RWTD and get a tune over the net. I might be able to pick up a KB Boost-a-pump locally to help with fuel delivery, or have to wait and pick one up online ... or would I need a whole new pump?

Anyone done this ... concerns, problems you think I'll run into ... ? I'd like to eventually step up to a KB 9psi kit when I get a new forged shortblock but that may be a while down the road.

This might hold me over for a while, but wasn't exactly sure what the hidden costs would be to have this run correctly. I figure as much as $500 for custom tuning and perhaps a little less then another $500 for misc parts.

Or am I just totally in the dark and this just plain won't work? heh.

I want to hear some of your thoughts ... thanks.

If you are doing a straight swap like that it's a pretty good deal, since you shouldn't have all the parts you both need. I just installed a used series II which is almost identical except for the blower itself. I am running a BAP on the stock pump with no problems. I look at is like this. If KB is selling it with their kits it should be fine with the Saleen kits unless you can figure out how to get them over 400 rwhp. As far as the tune, I already had a tweecer Rt and managed to get a copy of the KB tune, and modifed it for the different size injectors. I also have a wideband, and under full throttle I never see more than 11.2 A/F.

EDIT: Another thing you might consider, is you mentioned that you may want to go with a KB and forger SB later on. This kit already comes with a good twin screw SC, the reason it doesn't make as much power is the intake is pretty restrictive. For the price you would spend on a KB, and your forged shortblock, you could probably get a forged 5.4 shortblock, and lightning intake then use the SC you already have.

Shouldn't have all the parts? (Typo?)

Like I said, I was just a bit worried about getting the car tuned correctly without causing any damage before its looked over by a speed shop ... and more concerned if I was biting off more then I could chew (not so simple take off ... put on swap).

I'll call local shops about that I suppose, but wanted to get some feedback from people if they would do it given the tentative price for the swap. ~350rwhp is cool, but damn 400rwhp is so much better. :D

I'm at about ~270rwhp now.

Yeah sorry that was a typo. I had to make a couple of part that I didn't have, but what I meant was you shouldn't have that problem. The install is pretty straight forward. I did it in a weekend. Here are a couple of links. These are for a series II but the steps should be the same

As far as the tune, tweecer Rt and a wideband was the best investment I made, but it isn't for everyone. If you just want to get it to a shop to have it tuned, you can drive it on the stock tune, but it will just run rich, just DON'T floor it. These blowers have a bypass, so during normal driving it will be just like your normal intake with 30lb injectors.

Awesome info, that's exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks!

You rock. :nice:

400rwhp is possible with the series Iv. Ive heard that 430-450 rwhp with a safe tune on a stock gt motor is the limit so i would say 400rwhp with a safe tune is well...safe.As Jstreet Said, the saleen intake is restrictive, that abou the only thing wrong with the blower. The stock saleen ( borla catback, Saleen tune, k and n, supercharger) we made 340/ 350. Some bolt ond and you will see 400 rwhp. I will continue to talk to my dad and see if we cant do the swap.
