i read alot of the older post but since stangnet is kinda slow sometimes why not ask again. heres my situaiton. my best friend has a 94 6 banger 5 speed. He runs almost dead even with me. dont know why but he does. Now, another good friend is getting a 02 gt auto. im not gonna be able to stand up and be the bigger guy anymore...

so, this winter, the stang is getting put up for a while and getting worked on. Suspension out the wazoo and a cam. I NEED to be able to run with the gt. Give me a list and i will make it happen if its my budget. You all are the experts, put that mind to work!

The biggest thing you need right now is rear gears. Those 2.8s are killing you. Try investing there first and going up to a 3.25 or maybe if you are feeling frisky a 3.50. The 3.50 will get you a lot of kick in the pants, but not too much....I am turning 4000 rpms at 80mph right now while running 3.89s and am considering backing off to a 3.50.
 
If you had a 9 inch I have a 3.25 gears you could come down and get. Depending on what your budget its and I'm saying not much if your still in high school I doubt a nice set of aluminum heads would be there BUT I scanned ebay for about 2 months and finally got a sweet deal on a set of 289 high compression heads with around 54 cc chambers that had be ported/polished and flowed. Those things are night and day from the old stockers I had. I got them for only 500$. Another option is a set of the D00E 351 heads like these will allow more airflow but he never could get me flow numbers on them so I went with the other guys. I also would say get rid of the performer for an airgap, I have one and love it. My cam is a comp cams 280H, most will tell you its too much but once I got those heads it worked so well with them my car beats any factory gt easily and a lot of the ones that aren't pure race....thats what the giggle juice is for :D

News to me! Newer cars are even worse... the heads are designed more efficiently from the factory and thus you don't see as much of a power increase.

Take the guys with their honda's. They do a complete exhaust system upgrade. New header, bigger pipes, performance muffler, etc... and in the end they've spent nearly $1000 and are lucky to get 5hp.

A reasonable goal for our engines is 1rwhp for every cubic inch. So in your case... 290hp. Without some sort of a power adder, it's gets very difficult and expensive to pass this barrier (1hp per cubic inch) and still keep the engine streetable.
 
When some run mouth guy (not just import guys) tell you they are running crazy horsepower and have only done a cat back setup take it for what it is, crap.

The gears will give you no more horsepower, but it will make you faster and make your power more usable. I still stick to my guns that dollar for dollar you will see the most net gain.

LOL... I used to have a mustang buddy who would brag to me that his stang was putting out 450HP "all motor" When I finally asked him about it... he told me his mods. I kinda chuckled and said.. you're lucky if you are pushing 300hp with those mods. After which he decided to prove to me his car had 450HP by writting down all his mods and showing how much HP they gave him.. It looked like this:

stock - 250hp
K&N air filter - 20hp
Platinum plugs - 5hp
8mm plug wires - 10hp
cam - 30hp
headers - 20hp
dual exhaust with flowmasters - 30hp
high voltage coil - 10hp
flex fan - 5hp
underdrive pullies - 15hp
etc, etc, etc

Sure enough it added up to a little more than 450hp. Kinda made me laugh.. and at the same time it made me realize that some people are actually stupid enough to believe whatever someone who wants to sell them something says.
