Scotch Brite Ruining My Engine?

I would think using them in a solvent tank would be ok as long as you wipe the parts down once you've finished.

My brother learned the Scotch Brite lesson the hard way. Honestly, I thought what he did was stupid to begin with and probably different than what everyone is asking.... You know those Scotch Brite style wheels you can clamp up in a drill? He used one of those to clean the block's head mating surface on his old 5.9 Ram when he replaced the head after the intake gasket failure that they're known for. His truck died on him when he was a couple hundred miles from home pulling a trailer shortly after the swap. I asked him what all he did and he told me that that's how he cleaned the block. I told him he most likely clogged the pick up screen with those particles and he'll probably need to replace the engine now - which he had to do.

Obviously an apples to oranges situation, but I'd recommend pulling the engine and cleaning it thoroughly as well. @scottbrandon
I wipe them down with the solvent??
Those wheels and the wheels with the little stubs on them were sold as the new way to clean head surfaces... I remember when they first came out....
Companies used us as the testing Guinea Pigs.....

I mean wiping them dry after you use the solvent on them. That way there's no residue left over.

I think you are referring to the "roloc© discs" that were mentioned in Post #3?

He used something resembling this.

He said it worked really well, and I remember he said he covered the lifter valley, but particles still found their way into the oil pan. I don't recall what exactly happened to the engine - for some reason I think he spun a bearing - in any event, he had to replace it. He got lucky and I had a 5.9 short block on a stand from my old truck that I let him have. Lesson learned though, don't use Scotch Brite - especially if it's powered by something - on a half assembled engine. I supposed it would probably be ok if it were torn down and out of the engine bay, or if you were to send it off to have it hot tanked or something - but I wouldn't recommend it if it's still in the vehicle.
