Searched threads, still need timing help...

I was adjusting my timing today and I got it to where I want it. My dad and I used a timing gun and sort of ran it until the pinging stopped. The car runs fine, but I have no idea what * my timing is set at now. I just want to see a picture or something to tell me where my timing is set at since the guide near the crank had no markings.

Is advancing the timing moving the mark in the green arrow's direction or the red arrow's direction? My mark is sitting where the blue line is and there was some engraved letters by the red "X" but we couldn't read it. Is there any signifigance in the hole in that piece above the crank pulley?

I've searched many threads in the forum but found no photos, please help me with a photo or let me know how I can tell where my timing is set at. Thanks.

the fixed pointer with the X you drew in is what i use as the mark to check timing. i get under the car and clean the balancer up and then i use a silver marker (chalk and white out also work) to mark the balancer. i color in the 10* line and the 20* line and then i put dots on the 2* increment lines between.

the green arrow is going towards more timing advance. i might be wrong, but my hand tells me that turning the distributor clockwise advances the timing. and be sure to reinstall the SPOUT when you are done (if you are not gonna run locked out timing. ).

now if you can even see timing marks with the timing light, check the balancer. there is an outer ring with the timing marks engraved on it. then there is the inner ring, which is connected and keyed to the crank. there is an elastomer (rubber) connecting the two rings. when that elastomer goes south (and it does), the outer ring can slip, making the timing marks be completely in the wrong place. so i would check the balancer's elastomer for cracking and check the balancer for wobble (run out).

yeah he said it.....get under and chalk it real good or you'll never see the marks

start it, take the SPOUT out, time it...put the SPOUT back in

go for 14*

Thanks for the help, but I'm still a little confused. If I went down and cleaned it up, would I see engraved lines that I could colour in, or what are you using as starting points for your 10* and 20* markings? Does anyone have a photo of what they've done? When I went down and looked at it earlier, all I saw was a piece of metal over the crank with nothing on it. Thanks again.

ok, you need to get the timing marks facing you - you might need to bump the motor over a time or 6 to get it so you can see and write on the balancer timing marks.

what I would do: clean all the marks up. then put a line on the hash mark for 10* and 20* (kinda like i outlined above - we normally dont make so many markings, but since you are using a light to see where you are timed at, more marks might make it easier to see).

yeah - if you dont clean the marks and highlight them, good luck! with some paint, etc (like i said, silver marker works well for me) you can easily see the timing marks.

with the actual marks, when you look at it, you will see/feel the engraved hash marks (lines) and engraved numbers (every 10*). once you see what we are talking about, it makes sense.

you realize the timing marks are not on the pointer right....they are on the harmonic balancer , which is what the crank pulley is bolted to
