well i just got my cobra about a week ago and everything has been fine until yesterday. occasionally the car wouldnt go into first on the first try after stopping, it would grind and resist going in gear. now it does it every time i come to a stop and try to go into first. what is going on?

the car only has 8.5k miles. anybody have any ideas? im gonna call the dealer tomorrow to get it in but i was just hoping to getsome feedback from othe rowners about this problem.

thanks.

Damn bro, EXACTLY my story. Very shortly after I bought my Cobra, I found out that the tranny needed a rebuilt and the rear end was dying. Your 1st gear is shot. Probably the synchronizer, but could be a bent shift fork. I bought my '97 with 46k miles on it, and it needed a rebuilt 1st and 2nd gear, shift sliders, and a new 5th gear shift slider.

Grinding is usually a sign of worn synchro's or a bent fork. I can't believe its happeneing with 8k on the clock, the original owner must have abused the hell out of it. I am almost positive its your synchro though, you need to get it checked out immediently.

Good luck man.

thanks for info. but it sounds terrible. i hope its covered under warranty. if not i will be pissed. 8k and i have had the car for a week and 1st gear goes out! thats bull*****.

o well, we will see tomorrow what the dealer has to say about it.

thanks again.

No problem.

This problem with 8k on the clock is rediculous no doubt. I was extremely p!ssed to hear about my problems with a tranny with only 46k, much less one with a measly 8000 miles. Even the crappiest transmission in the *****tiest car in the world should last much longer than 8k without problems. Someone had to of abused the hell outta that tranny without proper break in. Ford better fix your problem. Mine was of course out of warranty, I would have been better off just buying a brand new T-45 tranny. But your problem should be addressed and fixed for free.

Let us know how it turns out man.

that's the tell tale signs of synchros. If the dealer refuses to fix it under warranty you should get a lawyer. They have to fix it with that low of mileage. Worst case scenario call svt directly and they will book you a time and a place to get it fixed....those guys are all about making you happy....good luck

thanks for the replie. i got it into my nearest svt dealer today, which was 45 min. away in sacramento,ca (got it towed) , and thye said it was a 1st gear synchro problem. you guys were right.

they said they will have to drop the tranny down and it should be ready tomorrow. nothing was mentioned about costing me anything so hopefully they fix it under warranty.

i'll let you guys know tomorrow what happens.

thanks.

well i was told that excessive amounts of brass was found and that the reason for the synchronizer going out is due to a improperly adjusted short throw shifter.

i didnt even know the damn thing had a aftermarket short throw shifter, because it still has the leather knob and boot around it. anyways, thats the reason for the problem. hopefully now everything will be adjusted correctly and will work fine.

thanks for the responses.

My transmission shop told me that Ford uses the same T-45 tranny that's found in our Cobras in other Ford cars, like rangers and such. That would royally p!ss me off, becuase we should be getting quality trannies that can hold high amounts of HP at high (6800-7000) rpm.

well i finally get the car back today.friday. its been over a week. it is being done under warranty even though the guy told me it shouldnt be covered.but he was kool and said that he wants my business in the future so he would take care of it.

i dont know what kind of shifter is in it. i am picking the car up in a little while and will ask.
