shop says my ignition is the cause to my overheating problems?

How could that be possible? Dont know the specific electronic componets, but i know I do have Crane ignition box and malory parts in there. He was telling me that I need to go with a pertronix and switch out my distributer etc. whats a decent price for this? Im a newbee, but appreciate all the input...

Well, i cant remember which one it is, but i know if your WAY too far advanced or retarded it will cause the car to over heat

How about some details of the motor? cooling system etc

If your car is operable, my advice is to get in the driver's seat, turn the key, and drive it out of that shop. Yes, advanced base timing can cause overheating. But any mechanic who thinks that a Pertronix has anything to do with base timing is one you need to avoid. A Pertronix is just a sensor that grounds the coil's primary circuit eight times per camshaft revolution, just like points do. The difference is that points do it mechanically and the Pertronix does it by sensing a change in magnetism. A Mallory Unilite -- if that's what you have -- does it with an LED, a shutter, and a light sensor. (Mallory also used to make points distributors.) If you already have a functioning Mallory Unilite, to swap that out for a Pertronix would be ridiculous.

Bottom line, I'd say, is to look elsewhere for your overheating problem. That subject has been covered extensively in each and every old car forum on the web, since all the oldies have their problems in that department.

im concerned

the car ran fine before i brought it in there. I just brought it in to have the cooling checked. They told me that my radiator is the best one out there so they will check the h20 pump etc. Now i get a call saying that my ignition is the cause.

302 with tons of mods
just dont know the details because i bought the car 2 years ago with all these mods.

get far far away from that shop. the timing could be WAY retarded making it run hot but it has absolutely nothing to with with what kind of distributor you use. he probably just wants to keep it for himself. tell him to F*** off and take the car somewhere else.

I just called the guy he said that the distributer was trashed and the electronic ignition is trash as well. he swapped the stock components in there and runs way better...is this BS or what???

I see yer problem. It's that monte carlo bar that's causing yer overheating. Let me swap out your expensive ignition for a POS stock unit and all your worries will be gone. BTW, you cannot have the old parts back because I already sold them on eBay.

Holy shlt, sounds like he wants a mallory for his ride...what a scam artist lol

Go back there...tell him you want your car back....tow it home...push it what ever.

Ignition may cause it to run a little warm...but not OVERHEAT and such....

The only problem now is, he thinks you know nothing (and no offense at all but you dont seem to know anything about basic cooling systems or ignition systems)

And he seems to be running all over you...If he all of a sudden "misplaced" or threw out you mallory dist. Well, then he just made a few hundredbucks on the side.

Ive had my Mallory for about 10 years, sometimes they dont know new parts so they stick with what they know, but I would just say put it back the way it was and take it home. The heating issue,if thats what it started as, is a process of elimination, but its fixable.

If he swaped it out for stock parts and now its working? yup work good in his car. There is a number he has to post called the BAR call them and say he is stealing your car parts. MY mallory has gone though 3 motors and I have only replaced the "brain" 3 times because of my mistakes.

This shop is ust taking your parts. They probably not the good shop you think. Many times a shop will build a reputation get clients then the owner will sell the shop and name. Then the new owner doesn;t have to prove themselves.

The only cooling issue I woudl see is a fan shroud.

i second calling bar on this guy. it sounds like he is conning oyu. make him give you back your old parts when you pick up the car, and if he refuses to do so, call the local police.

I think I spotted the source of your overheating in your photos. Get rid of the filter your have spliced inline with your radiator hose. It not only cuts down on your flow (causing overheating) but could also break (plastic?) or blow off the ends of this plastic piece leaving you stranded or worse (engine failure). If a filter was that important to a cooling system Ford would have them in all their cars from the factory. IMHO
