What are the pros and cons for shorties and long piped headers. I am looking at the application for my 05. Also, I was looking through Muscle mustangs mag. and saw "Stubbies." Are these just a different name for shorties?

If you want the long and short of it, both styles change the sound of your exhaust, but the long tubes give you more horsepower (16+) compared to the shorties (4hp max, I think). With long tubes the stock midpipe won't fit, so you'll either need to do some surgery or buy a midpipe to fit the headers and muffler pipe.

there are threads on the subject on this forum, www.mustangforums.com, www.modularmustangs.com, www.corral.net, and forums.bradbarnett.net. I think a little searching will provide a lot of information for you.

As to stubbies, I haven't heard that one!

Hope this helps.

Its quite simple really. Go long or go home.

the magazine test I read tested 4 different brands of shortires and the best results were a 4hp increase and torqu gains were similar. I don't think thats worth the hassle, personally.

shorties are a waste of money. the $/HP is poor. the long tubes are expensive, but give you much better gains. if you want more power, then get the LONG TUBES!!

All of the long tubes that I've seen (ie. JBA) are labeled as "off road use only", but the shorties are not. Why is this? What makes the long tube headers illegal for street use?

Yes I would like to know the answer to this question as well!

Also, what about these Kook headers, are these Long tubed?

http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=egnsearch.asp&N=400390&rsview=prod

And are these street legal, these JBA's?

http://www.lmperformance.com/5507/73.html

and my question is, which one's are better, the hookers or the JBA's, the Hookers are cheaper which is much more appealing, obviously.

As far as I can tell, the Stainless works kit keeps you street legal.

BUt in other post you can read that the laws a written such that you can not move the locations of you cats or tamper witht them in any way.

So depends on how you look at it. The Stainlessworks has the cats, and pipes with 02 Sensors to get everything hooked up. I think some others have this as well.

From the pictures I have seen of installs, its not much of a loss on the S197s. THough, if you lower your car it may still cause issues.

So...why are they illegal? Are you only safe with the shorties? Are there normal headers that are streat legal?
