I'm building a 408 stroker. It won't be raced very much or turn real high rpm's. Should I buy a SFI rated flexplate or use a stock one I have that was behind a 69 302. Since they're not very expensive I'd rather buy one now if I need another one. If you think I need a new one which brand would you recommend?

If your building for that kind of power I would just put a SFI one in. Its better to be safe then sorry.

your already there,do it. I know 2 buddys that lost a ring gear and it ripped through the bell housing and one through the hood and floor.One was racing and one was just cruising(i was in that car and it like a bomb went off under the hood.)

since you are there, you may as well make sure you dont have to go back and fix something that broke when you could have avoided it.

Thanks for the replys. It sounds like it is unanimous. Has anybody used any of the cheap ones that are sold on ebay? I didn't see a brand on them but they may be a name brand rebadged and sold cheaper. Anybody know? I just don't want to buy one and my machinist tells me it is way out of balance and that'll cost more $$. Would you guys buy the cheap one or spend more for a name brand?

look in a summit racing magazine, i believe they sell TCI's which is a good brand and they are not very expensive.

I'll share my experience with buying the cheap eBay deals... Don't do it! I bought a new SFI rated 28oz billet steel FW for $98 because I figured, hey they are all the same and are rated at 28oz, so why spend the extra cash... Bad decision. I had a really bad engine vibration that I ultimately traced to the flywheel. I replaced the FW with a Ford Racing piece that cost $250, but I no longer have a vibration problem, so worth it. The quality between the 2 pieces were night and day. The cheap FW had the counter weight welded on very poorly with messy welds. Hole were not chamfered etc. I spent more time & energy chasing this problem, ripping out the trans, clutch etc. Lesson learned, when building anything you care about, only use the good stuff

Thanks again for the info. Pretty much what I figured but I wanted to make sure. None of the ebay converters for me.
