I've been looking at a 351 crate engine from Ford Racing, and I just have a few small questions for anyone that either has one or might have looked at them. First off, this particular engine it rates at 385 horsies, how come more people aren't scooping these things up at a reasonable price of $5,495. Is it the gas prices, or something else?

Second, my 302 is 27 inches wide, whereas the 351 claims to sit 36 inches across. Am I going to have to cut into my fenderwell? I tried to look at a picture of the Cobra R, but still couldn't quite grasp it, because my 5 litre seems to fill up that engine bay like a nun's...nevermind.

Any opinions or suggestions?

wow, i'm very interested in the 351 idea....

did you have to use custom brackets for accessories?

did you use a taller hood?

different headers?

different h-pipe?

thanks for the info, man.

i looked it all up at one time... you will need a differnt oil pan... 351 swap headers... new intake manifold... Trick flow makes one for a 351.... uhh also need to cut and extend your fuel rails .. unless you buy after market ones ... thats about it... all the front acc bolt right up to it... they us the same heads

Use the stock brackets with a longer belt.

Taller hood is amost madatory.

Stock H pipe can be used if you use the hooker shorties, I believe.

Nose weight is holding me back and class restrictions.

I wouldnt buy one of those. 385 Fly wheel hp really isnt that much for those cubes. I would piece together your own combo. Buy a shortblock (393 or 408) from CHP or dss or something, then get a cam and heads (afr205's), it will be a little bit more then the 5k frpp motor, but way more power and much better heads/cam. Plus does that engine even have forged pistons/rods/crank? CHP sells an all forged shortblock for 3k even..

I thought the 351 was only 2 inches wider at the top? I know the intake manifold is only around 2 inches wider..........

YellowCobra is wise. 385 is not all that much made that much out of a 302.

sorry, people, i haven't gotten back on here lately because i flew to the east coast for a few days of drunken madness. Thanks for all the suggestions and advice. The horsepower numbers i'm looking for from the complete engine are somewhere around the area of 385, that way with my small bolt ons and such, i should be sitting somewhere in the mid 400 range. Anything more would be unsuitable for daily driving, I don't think i'd want much more than 500 unless I was going to start some serious track duty. Gas is pricey too. The 351 sits me at a very good starting point, trying to squeeze over 400 out of a 302 might turn out to be more costly than just opting for the 5.8 litre.

I'm difinately going with a 393. I think your 351 choice is great. The way I look at it is, I can buy a big inch somewhat mild 351 based motor and have it make great power and not have to work so hard, as opposed to a 302 based one that's either built to the hill or over-engineered to where there's reliability issues or too much to go wrong, I'm just shooting for a daily driver as well.
