i ran a search for it and all that turned up was about 4.10 gears.

i'm unsure of the exact year but i know its a 4.6 Manual.

it is not my car its a co-worker's she said if she downshifts it shuts off but if she puts it in N and slows more then downshifts it's fine so what could cause this?

she also said that in the morning when she starts it the car is really loud....i assume she means it idles higher and obviously the exhaust is louder.

any help will be appreciated thanks.

Does it die when she pushes the clutch in or when she lets it out to engage the newly selected gear?

I'll ask exactly what happens tomorrow and give it a quick look she gave a vague answer but from what i understood its when she pushes the clutch in downshifts from like 3rd or 4th to 2nd using it to slow still holding the clutch in and then i'm not sure if it dies then or when she trys to take off in it....i know it is not her killing it from not letting the clutch out right or anything she is very good at driving a manual. what would it might be the problem either way.

Sorry dude but that is not tech and its not even funny

Anyways, a better description of exactly how it is stalling out would definitely help. The amount of miles and how well the car is maintained will also help.

A common problem with these cars, if they will not idle and just die all the time, is the IAC failing. You can search for IAC if you want...

Seriously people...are you in elementary school

Anyway, it could be many things.

Check the PCV and grommet, IAC, MAF, TPS, fuel filter, vac lines.

Thats a start.

keep comments like this out of the tech section.

as far as this problem is concerned, you going to have to drive it and figure out when it does it exactly, see if you can find a pattern and post back.

alright it only does it if you downshift every gear like if your in 5th and go 4th,3rd,2nd and will only die once in awhile the only person who does that is her husband she just puts it in N.

it doesn't buck either it just flat out dies so i don't think he's doing anything then again i've never even met him so maybe but could there still be a problem?

i asked about the fuel filter she said she was pretty sure he had a new one put on......then again she also said he had it built up but then said they had a thousand bucks in it.

she went to have it put on a computer and they told her they couldn't do it because of the add on she'd have to go to ATL.

only reason i'm helping is he has her have the work done on cars and the last time she got her Ion "fixed" she got ripped off bad. it blew a headgasket and i still say they torque'd it wrong and caused it to leak again. he told her she needed a new engine and she decided to just get her money back for repairing it the first time and he could keep the car well he sold it 2 days later for 3X what she got back and he told her he couldn't even get the new engine for it for another week or two.

Ok from trying to decipher these.
The car dies, sometimes, when the car is downshift while stopping.
Ok couple of quick things.
IAC - pull it off clean it put back on, or replace, personally cleaning alot cheaper and easier.
MAF - It could be dirty, considering the amount of mods hahaha, I'm guessing there is a k&n or equialivent filter on there. Clean the MAF.
TPS - it could be acting flakey.
Leak around the plenum.
TB- could be a bad aftermarket TB. see MAC tb's.

I know on some GT's a problem occured when pushing/holding in the clutch and slowing down would cause the car to stall. If it happens when it's in gear and you're letting the clutch out then it's not the same problem.

However, if you downshift and leave the clutch pushed in (thus not engaging the gear) and come to a stop the car can stall. As far as I know there is no fix for this.

Mine does this ...exactly as described. Any ideas?
(no problem with the idle ...just happens when I push the clutch and bring the RPMs down fast to come to a stop)

Ever tried replacing the IAC? That's probably the part that has the most to do with idle while decelerating.

And to the guy above that said "Bang her" .. .. that's one right from my book.

Im almost sure its the IAC, because mine did the same thing. It just got dirty, I tried to clean it and it still did it. I bought a new one from NAPA for about $50. Back to normal.
