They do it for several reasons, less parasitic drag on the engine, little less weight up front, cleaner engine bay, etc. I'm sure there's lots of guys on here who have done it(not me cause the new ones have it tied into the computer) and since there's no smog check in Saskatchewan then I guess you could say it's legal.
I removed mine. Just start ripping stuff out..lol. Seriously it's not hard. Unbolt the smog pump (2 bolts i believe) Take out the lines and valves that are in the lines. Then you'll need to plug up the lines that go back to the heads. I picked up a part from home depot and shoved it in there and it doesn't leak or anything. I have an O/R h-pipe so i didn't have to worry about the piping giong down there, but if you don't have one you'll have to plug those lines as well. If you need any help just pm me
If you still have cats on the car, leave the smog pump on. One of its functions is to provide oxygen to heat the cats and improve their function. Removing the smog pump will cause the cats to clog. It won't happen in a week, but it will occur.
Once the cats are gone, rip it off. The holes in the back of the head can be plugged with the Ford plugs. I took the little block that was already on it, sawed off the tube, and flipped it upside down. Works great.
ok you say the hole in the back of the head need to be plugged? what kind of material should i get to plug them??? also is there anything else i would need to do this? i think someone said a shorter belt??
The part Ford uses for plugging the holes in the back of the heads is part# F4ZZ-6E086-A.
Comes in one package with two plugs. One for each head. I have the package in my hand right now.
Or you could find somthing else to plug them. But these plugs will look factory.
Plugs are cheap, I used em, it's also a common Coarse thread, I cleaned mine with a bolt to start, then red loctite-ed the threads on the inserts. You could use a bolt I guess if you're worried about the cost of the plugs...they're the same as the ones on the front, threaded inside, have a notch for a screwdriver to install them....
I got my belt for about $35.00 at crappytire. The belt lenght that I used was 72.5 inches long. Thats after removing the A/C & Smog pump, and buying the two brakets to relocate the power steering pump up where the A/C used to be.
