I was thinking of eliminating my smog pump, If so am I gaining any extra horsepower? I live in a county were we have no emissions test. How would I go about doing this project? Thanks
based on my drag racing experience it wont make any HP but it will free up some HP. You will be reducing the amount of energy it takes for the engine to turn the smog pump. You will need a shorter belt or a smog pump eliminator. The smog pump eliminator kinda defeats the purpose in removing the pump in my opinion. You can get shorter belt & leave the pump on. I have a pdf file somewhere that shows belt size & routing instructions. Ill dig it out & post it.
you wont gain power but you will lose some weight off the front of the car. the dissasembly is pretty straightfoward, just take a look at it and you will see. you might need to buy a smog eliminator pulley, or run a shorter belt.
Just take it off, buy a shorter belt, then rip out all that tubing and such coming from the pump and block off the holes in the back of the heads to take out those tubes.
Smog pump & all the parts weigh about 10-15 lbs. Not enough to make any measureable difference in the car's performance.
The A/C compressor weighs about 15 lbs, the condensor weighs about the same. Take it off and lose $100-$300 in the car's resale value depending on where you live..
