some r-12 questions

Hey guys,

My wife's 66 coupe's air decided not to work the other day. Since it is 95 plus here she has been relegated back to her saturn. She is not too happy about that. I figure that it is low on freon. I was able to score 3 cans of r-12 and the hoses but the cans say "to use gas hold upright while charging, to use liquid, turn can upside down while charging." Which do I want to do? I found the suction port on the compressor but I want to make sure that I am doing it right. Thanks for the help.

You want to add it to the low side only and do not turn it upside down as to put liquid into the compressor or you could lock it up. It should go in as a gas only, but you really need gages to do it right since R12 is like gold these days. I would also pull a vacuum on the system to find the leak or confirm that it does not leak otherwise you will waste your R12. Good luck!

what huey said. if the a/c hasnt been used in sometime, likely the refrigerant just leaked out of the old hose, and recharging wont be a problem. but if the a/c has been used, then you have a leak that needs repairing before you add refrigerant.
