someone bought my car and is having problems with the axle leaking oil...need info

ok, I can see the point about admitting anything. You're 95% in the right. I'll amend my advice and recommend that you tell the guy to go hang. I think next time if you're not 100% sure what parts are in the car, just say "I don't know" or "both rear wheels spin at once - not sure what's in there." or "Previous owner said it had xx, never checked."

So, yeah, the guy is trying to get a new rear housing on you, and there is no WAY he couldn't tell it had a spool to begin with. Did he even go around a corner? I've never driven a spool, but from everything I read, it's impossible not to tell when you go around a corner . . .

correct me if im wrong.... doesnt posi = spool.... & some kinda of track lock = limited slip (which is what most people want) you said posi..thats what he got... (full time posi) Tell him to go to kragen and buy a $5 dollar gasket or even some rtv black and seal it up... I hate when people buy a classic and expect it to be perfect.

A little off topic. What is the color of the blue mustang? Is it acapulco blue?

I think the color is atlantic blue metallic which came off a 2003 ford ranger I think. If you want to know for sure I can get you exactly what it is.


Well I sent the guy the email with this link and here is what he sent back.

Just forget the whole thing. I will take it as a lesson to me and am sorry for the nasty emails. I was very frustrated about the rearend. The car looks great and runs great. The spool is not a daily driver. All of the people with the solutions haven`t seen the grooves in the housing where a seal is to go . I will try to resolve the problem myself. Ask all the pros via email to relax I have the problem not them. I was not expecting to put money into the rearend I had that money earmarked for interior new carb and chrome. That will have to wait. This was the car I had when I was 18 in 1968 and wife made me sell it cause it wasn`t an family car. I have calmed down and took a chill pill. Have a good day

Like I said I `m sorry but was frustrated. I will deal with it . The groove is not at the bearing in runs length ways with the axle as if someone did this trying to pull something off. Was not trying to take advantage of you .Was frustrated not get a responce back from you on the problem. I went about it the wrong way . Sorry again and I will take care of the problem and I guess we both learned something. I will enjoy the car and put alot of money into it. It`s to keep not for sale..You wil not here from me again it I have cause enough blood pressure problems for both of us. Good luck.

I'm glad to hear that everything turned out ok. I agree about one lesson - if you don't know tell the buyer, "I don't know". It's hard selling and buying anything, but especially cars.

I know a guy who bought a car from another friend and a week later a spring perch failed due to rust. He took it to a shop and they said all the perches were nearing failure and it would cost more than the car was worth to fix. It sucks for all involved when something like that happens. Whenever you buy a car and something goes wrong the first instinct is always to blame the seller and assume the seller knew about the problem...

Reminds me of the old man that bought a 69 Chevelle from me and gave it to his grandson.
He called me back a week later screaming about the transmission "leak" and wanted me to take the car back.

The grandson called me a little later that day and said "don't tell granpa, but I hit a set of RR tracks a little too fast
and bottomed out the tranny and ripped the pan off".

I told granpa to take a hike!

Wow....first of all...Dark...I"m sorry...I mean...really!



Here's the deal:

Some of you know that I'm looking for a 67-69 camaro for me and a friend to work on (he'll own it) anyway...

We found one that claimed to have all of the body work done, complete car, just needed the floor pans to be replaced. We asked this fella about the frame, etc. and he said it was all good.

Well this was up in Bemidji MN, which is about a 6Hr. drive north of where we are. Me and andrew drove up, and were very disappointed when we got there. Tho bottom 1/3 of the firewall was gone, the floors were non-existant, the trunk pans were rotted through, the inner fender wells were rusted through, and the frame rails of all things had holes big enough to fit your hand through! and i could poke a knife through most of the sub-frame. and the "body work" bondo was already cracking and peeling away from the body.

Moral of the story is, this guy wanted $6500 for something that wasn't worth more than $2000 for parts. We drove 6 hours one way, plus the cost of diesel to look at a rust bucket...cause the guy was dishonest. We very simply said that this wasn't the car that we were looking for...that easy...no cussing swearing, or racism. Although we clearly got the raw end of the stick.

Under the terms of the sale, did you state that the rear-end was freshly rebuilt within the year? if not, I don't see how he has any grounds for his anger....especially considering the fact that you had 80+ nice full size pictures.....clearly he didn't look close enough, because with that many, you DEFINITELY covered every area that could've been a problem.

Sure when i got my 68, the PS ram did (and still does) leak, but its a 40 year old piece of equipment for crying out loud!!!!! And I ended up paying for basically all new bushings/rod ends etc for the whole front end....did i raise hell and tell the guy to fix it?? NO!

personally.....I wouldn't give the guy squat....at the most...buy the spool back from him, get a used factory limited slip with the money and say HERE! there's your D*$MN limited slip. Outside of that... crapola

You should have some of your own "shops" take a look at the so-called problems.....it sounds a little one sided to me.

I wish you the best of luck...and although the guy obviously doesn't have any manners of his own...that doesn't mean YOU still can't be tactful....

I thing the moral of the story would be, don't buy or sell cars on ebay. I got completely burned when I bought my "solid" 66. When I got it home, I sanded through 1/2 inch of bondo on both rear quarters, to find lots of rust, had stripped tranny bolts in bellhousing, and broken clutch bolts in flywheel. I do everything on craigslist locally, and write up a bill of sale with terms of acceptance "AS IS".
