I did a search on Timing and nothing came up that Iam looking for, I would like to adjust the timing on my 88 LX 5.0

1. What is the stock timing ?

2. Do I advance it 12-16* by turning the distributor clockwise? so will it be 12-16* after TDC

3. Do I have to disconnect anything before adjusting the timing

4. 89-91 and up octane is now needed correct ?

Thanks in Advance

1. supposed to be 10*...can vary and is often as low as 6-8*

2. turn the distributor clockwise to advance...should be able to get it around 12-16* Before TDC

3. yes you need to pull the spout connector.

4. depending on how much timing you add, yes.

advance it 2 degrees at a time and test drive it thoroughly to determine if it pings...if it doesn't, advance it 2 more degrees and re-testdrive it. once you get it to where it pings, back down the timing two degrees. keep your ears open for detonation for about a week, since different conditions can facilitate pinging...and don't buy lower octane gas than what you had when you set the timing.

hmm i wonder why everybody says "advance the timing" to gain power.... but you dont advance it, RETARD it! maybe people just dont like you say they made their engine retarded...and got good results

what??? ummm, its advancing timing...because your advancing the ignition event. meaning, the ignition event happens sooner...not later. its happening before top dead center, not during or after.

As tengram already pointed it, you have it entirely backwards.
