Hey all, I'm new to these forums. I've been driving a 65 coupe I restored 4yrs back-without a radio. So after being spoiled by all my friends cars that do have radios, I've decided that its time for change. I've always been meaning to put in a radio but there was always something else that needed attention and eventually I just got used to the no radio idea. So my question is this:

The cars already loud with all the engine vibrations, so what kind of sound deadening materials do you guys suggest? Also if anyone has any experience in putting the stuff in that'd be great. I've personally done all the car gut work but I've never put in any sound systems or sound deadening stuff before. Everyone tells me it's easy, but no one can personally say that it's easy from experience. If anyone has any system suggestions that'd be great too.

So to reinterate -
  • What kind of sound deadening material should I use?
Does anyone have any pointers on how to do this?
    Speaker/amp suggestion are cool too.

thx all

Head over to Best Buy or any stereo retail store and pickup a few rolls of Dynamat.

I did this last night and plan to install it later tonight. I have horrible exhaust drone and overall loud road noise running through the car. It won't get completely rid of the sound, but take it down to a more acceptable level.

did you install the factory sound deadening kit before you installed your carpet? they are precut and lay in place under the carpet, in the trunk and behind the rear seat. there is also a reproduction of the firewall insulation if yours is gone.

FatMat off ebay, same as dynamat with about 1/100 the cost. Worked great (put it in my 67) Gets rid of more road noise than exhaust though.... But maybe that is just my exhaust (loud).

Shop around before buying Dynamat; there are cheaper alternatives. The factory sound deadening doesn't help much.
To install, the least you need to do is remove the seats,(4 nuts), and remove some trim and the carpet. Some is peel and stick, others need to be glued. It's all easy to do but time consuming. You may find rust that will need to be addressed when you remove your carpet making it an even longer process.

I am no expert on this subject however, I have been looking into this recently for my own project. I have found Fatmat on eBay also and find the price very tempting because of Dynamats outrageous prices. However, Fatmat is made of asphalt where as Dynamat and other more expesive brands such as Second Skin are made of this Butyl Rubber material. For this reason Fatmat is not the equivalent of Dynamat, or Dynamat Extreme. I have also read that Original Dynamat is a waste, and if you go Dynamat get the Extreme stuff. Fatmat is I believe better than peel and stick because of its thickness and Peel and Stick is made for roofing and you get it at places such as Home Depot or Lowes.
Asphalt also has a lower melting point than Butyl which might make it a HUGE mess if you live in a hot climate. Asphalt also smells like.. . .Asphalt when you get it then it comes back when it heats up. Fatmat says that the smell goes away after you install it. . .It's up to you to believe this. I was going to go the Fatmat route but after hours of reading and searching on Google I think I will pay more later for something better. It scares me to think I would be smelling asphalt while driving on a long trip just for a quieter ride.
Here are some links to information I have found:
Read all the way to the bottom where he says it stinks:

Sorry for the ton of links but I couldn't find one of them that had the melting points and the thicknesses of them all in one page. Just a warning though but you get what you pay for, kind of because Dynamat is still outrageous.

Edit: Instead of making another post I'll edit.
I just decided to do some more searching and came up with this site:
http://www.soundprooffoam.com

It seem their stuff is very similar when reading about it to Second Skin:
http://secondskinaudio.com/products/

For example Second Skins 'Motor Mat' sounds exactly the same as:
http://www.soundprooffoam.com/industrial_soundproofing.html

Again I am not an expert so I just read stuff. But their site does say you can that stuff in cars.

Also this:
http://www.soundprooffoam.com/vinyl_barrier_composite.html

Looks and sounds exactly like Second Skins Rattle Pad, Overkill, and Luxury Liner.

I did not really compare prices but Second Skin along with every other 'car' soundproofing company just ups the price because they are in that specific market, advertising to specific people saying their product is unqique.

Hope you find something good to use.

I have two gallons of this product, which I intend to apply to the interior floors, interior wheel wells and inside the rear wheel wells. From the information provided it seems to be very effective.

I have used dynomat Xtreme in dozens of cars and I cant say that anyone has been dissapointed. I like the fact of it being peel and stick and you never know it is under the rug and it conforms to almost every nook and cranny. I know it is not cheap but I think the benefits out weigh the cost.

don't forget that this mat or anything that you stick down could hold moisture and rot your floorboards out, how could you inspect it to see? and what a mess it would be to try and remove it later.

Yeah, I think the liquid stuff may be the asphault stuff he was talking about. I used the stuff that came in a roll. I got 100 sq ft for $100. Didn't smell even when I put it in, and worked great, despite having someone else on the internet telling me it doesn't work!

I purchesed something similar at a hardware store. It is actually insulation for hot water heaters and the like, but it worked pretty good in my 73 mustang for reducing the noise levels. My exhaust note is pretty loud at 2000rpm, but that stuff really took it down a notch.

How hard is it to apply that liquid stuff? I might try undercoating the stang with it also.

Has anyone tried Line-X or Rhino Vinyl on their floorboards? I know these are intended for truck bed liners, but they look like they would work great for sealing and insulation purposes.
