Source For Genuine Ford Or Motorcraft Parts?

I'm chasing whatever is killing my TFI modules.
I'm dealing with a 5.0 swapped into a Jeep.
After driving the Jeep for a while the throttle starts to be lazy. It seems to get progressively worse. The engine will start stalling when the accelerator is pushed. Eventually dying on the side of the road. Yesterday she even back fired a couple times while I nursed it home. This swap is about 10+ years old and it's been a good machine. But the last year has been torture as every fix comes up bust! I hate that it's not dependable any more.

I've relocated the module to the fender, but it only helped a little. My modules are still dying.
I feel like I've swapped all the main components for new ones, but I'm still having issues.
So now I'm wondering if you guys have a source for buying genuine Ford parts. As I'd like to buy another distributor and module, and see if they solve my problem. I've gone through several Rock Auto Cardone distributors and realize they aren't getting the job done.

Usually if they have motorcraft of Ford parts available, rockauto.com will have them.

National parts depot has a lot of NOS and motorcraft/original stuff. I see them listing motorcraft TFIs

I'm also gotten mine from s boneyard. If I go into a yard for anything, I pull them off a 5.0 car if I see one.

And I totally agree with you on buying as much genuine Ford parts as I can....even NOS if I can find it.

NPD Motorcraft TFI's are out of stock. LMRS have just recently stocked Motorcraft TFI's. I just bought one off eBay myself.

I'm really not chasing the module as much as I am a quality distributor. I can get Motorcraft modules all day long at O'reilly's if I specify it, and don't mind waiting a day or so.
But I keep reading these posts where guys are buying remanned, or "new" distributors. I can't find a source any where....... I guess it's a thing of the past. I'm down with grabbing one from the junkyard. But it's hard to know if I'm improving anything if I'm replacing one unknown for another.

I agree with the distributor thing but may I add that you should check the grounds and make sure your alternator is workong correctly, along with fuel pressure.

I'm checking everything at this point. I seriously have some gremlin that needs to be exorcised out of this vehicle. I'll be adding some grounds to be sure things are as solid as they can be. I just ran into a post about fuel pressure tonight, so that's on my radar.......

If the TFI modules are any indication, there's no way Cardone distributors are the same as Ford units. I gave up on Rockauto distributors after two of the modules basically fell off the side of the distributors without effort...... Plus, Ford is pretty good about stamping FOMOCO on everything.... I would think that would show up some where.....

But thanks for all the input guys......... the struggle continues.....

Just to clarify are you just looking for a place to source parts or are you looking for advice on how to correct the problem? Or both.

Ultimately, I need this resolved and will take any advice for getting the Jeep back on the road and dependable. It's finally 100 degrees out, and I'm stuck in the garage. But this post is asking primarily where to find a reman/new distributor for the motor.

I welcome the side discussion of what to chase. But note, that I've changed every sensor that I could during an "upper end rebuild". I've even replaced the ECM. This was gonna be the year of the Jeep, so I've tried replacing old worn parts as needed. Because I wanted nothing but dependable fun this year.

The Jeep has never produced codes. So that's part of the hurdle. I just ordered a code reader, and an "official" wiring diagram. I'm gonna try to get it to generate codes, so that I'm not throwing parts at it, or shooting in the dark. However you wanna say it. But the engine/EFI swap is over 10 years old, and I've never had this much trouble from it.

I've gone through several junkyard distributors, as well as new ones from RockAuto. I've read everything online on what it could/should be, and nothing seems to be the answer. I can feel the module dying the longer I drive. The accelerator continues to get more sluggish as I drive. And once it's dead, replacing the module gets me down the road again. But I rarely experience a "no spark" situation until it's kaput. I finally did the remote mounted TFI module. But it doesn't seem to have helped much at all. I know the fender location is 50 degrees cooler than the distributor location. But my module is still dying.

Repetitive failures of TFI modules - are you using real thermal heatsink compound? - Artic Silver is the best and most expensive, but it does the job.

You need to find someone who can connect up an Oscilloscope to your electrical system. There may be major electrical spikes that are part of the short life of your TFI modules.

Pin 20 of the computer wiring harness is the TFI shield ground. Make sure that it is grounded at the computer. Its purpose is to shield the TFI module wiring from electrical noise generated by the ignition system.

The code reader is a Walmart item - they probably have the best price. Reader/dp/B000EW0KHW Equus - Digital Ford Code Reader 3145. Cost is $22-$36.

For the record, I used Arctic Silver once, and then what version O'reilly sells once.....

That's exactly the reader I ordered, and I ordered from Walmart....so.. maybe I'm on the right track??

If I'm reading your post correctly, it seems that you might have not included a link to the wiring diagrams? You say they are right "here"...... but it's not a link of any sort.....

Veryuseful.com, them select the setup you have, or close since it is a swap, maybe this one?

Also check out the cranks but no start checklist, it can help with checking certain stuff computer related, like most problems with these systems it's gonna be something your missing.

EDIS swap it. No more TFI to worry about. Downside is no cheap when you factor in the tuner.

With all the issues you have with the TFI, I wonder if it's less of the TFI dying, vs something killing it.

Has it ever been reliable?

I think something is "killing" the TFI too...... it's just a matter of figuring out what it is. The TFI/Jeep was VERY stable for 10-12 years. Normal issues, but fixed and ran fine. But this last year it's just been torture. Thinking I've had it fixed, and ever time it's been tested long term, she's let me down.
