Speaker Help (1991 5.0)

Hello all,

I had a few questions for you audio experts out there. I have a 91 as the title states, and I want to replace my crappy speakers.

What size speakers does a 91 come with? Does it come with a stock amp? Any decent brands, I'm not looking for anything to crazy.

My main concern is the dimensions of the speakers, and what are my limitations when installing new speakers. Thanks for all your help like always.

If it's a hatch you will need: 3 1/2 in the dash, 5 1/4 in the door and 6X8 in the rear.

You can alter the sizes. I plan on going with Boston Acoustics 6 1/2 seperates in the door with the tweeter mounted in the dash. i plan on adding 4X50 Alpine amp to run those and whatever I put in the rears.

I have a set of MB Quart 5.25's that are great speakers. They are a seperate but the tweeter is mounted on them. You can buy crossovers for them or use the crossover in the amp for that channel. $50 plus shipping.

Did you try www.crutchfield.com? They usually list speaker sized spesifically made for your car.

It's possible to put 6 1/2 speakers in the doors, although you will have to do a little modding. The doors in these cars are very shallow, so often time you have to use a spacer to install better speakers, even some 5 1/4's. I made spacers out of 1/2" MDF, and still need to either space the stock grilles out as well, or get different grilles. It's not really that hard and well worth the effort.

I put my tweeters in the dash speaker locations as well. A lot of people will tell you the tweeters should be as close as possible to the midranges, and in therory they're right. Personally I'm pretty happy with how they sound in the dash though, so I'll probably keep them there. My car is pretty loud, and I like a lot of treble anyway, so it helps having the tweeters located in the dash.

BTW I am running MB Quart component speakers off a 100x2 Soundstream amp and they sound awesome. Guyfoxbody's Quarts for $50 sounds like a very good deal, although I would definately find the correct MB Quart crossover for them on eBay or somewhere, as they're optimized for those particular speakers. You'd need a good amp with at least 50x2 watts RMS for them too, but set up properly Quarts should sound great.

I'd reccomend an external amp for whatever speakers you buy, it makes a huge difference in sound quality, especially in a louder car where you might be distorting a headunit's internal amp just to get it loud enough to even hear your music.

Infinty makes some good speakers. Either the lower end Reference series or the Top end Kappas. Cheap on Ebay. Amp them for best sound.

They're OK. But Bostons or Quarts (even in their respective "cheaper lines") will blow Infinity away.

You can get the crossovers for my speakers from MB Quart. or a reputable install shop can use a quality crossover. The model number is QM130.

Let me know as I may keep these for the rears for fill.
