I bought the speedo gear set for a 3.73 gear (this is for the T-5 tranny), well I see for the 7-tooth drive gear you have to remove the back part of the trans to put it on? (my trans is out of the car, along with the motor) but don't know if I want to mess with it, if I don't have to.... Is the stock drive gear already 7-tooth anyway? And if so, then I just have to pop out the stock speedo gear and install the 21-tooth one????

I think technically replacing both gears is the correct way to do it.
But when I did my 3:73 gears in my 93GT I didn't know about the drive gear so I just installed the
recommended driven gear and speedo is within 1-2mph when checked it against my nav.
Still going strong over 10yrs., but I can't remember exactly what gear I installed I think it
was the white 21 or 23 tooth.

THe 7-tooth was stock on certain years..up to 1989. After that is was 8 tooth.

Shine a flashlight into the speedo gear hole and look at the gear color. Yellow is 7 tooth. There is also a black and green gear for the 6 and 8 tooth drive gears but I forget which color is which.

If you have the 8 tooth gear, you can try a white 23-tooth speedo gear to compensate.

The speedometer "driven gear" is clipped onto the end of the speedometer cable. That is the easy one to change. The speedometer "drive gear" is slid onto and clipped to the output shaft (aka the "tail shaft") of the transmission. The shaft housing has to be removed from the transmission to change that one.

ok, thanks... I will see what's in there when I get ready to do it...(right now weather is cold, so looks like I'm done working on getting car back together until spring) so if I pull the rear housing (watch youtube video, doesn't look bad. to do, is black permatex good to seal it? if not, what is the best thing to use?
