Speedo Question? What would you do???

Hey Gents....

My 88 has a Ford Motorsport 160 MPH speedo in it at the moment. Was there when I bought the car....

I got the 140 MPH white face overlays from LRS for Christmas and want to try them out, but not really sure I want to mess up this Speedo.

The clusters I'm finding on ebay and such with the 140 speedo are more money than this whole changeover is worth.........

Are there any other sources for just the 140 speedo itself? or would you just change over the one I all ready have?

I only found one refference to the Motorsport speedo when I search the forums and it doesn't deal with value or rarity....

If I go ahead and put the white face on this one, can the original face be reapplied in the future?

Thanks for you thoughts........

Jeff

PS I guess I can try to get a PIC of it up if you like.....

I put whiteface gauges in my vert and I liked them because i had white interior....i also put them in my 93 gt and later wished i didnt... I would keep the 160 personaly.... I have the 87-89 140 speedo in my coupe I just put it in there. Ill trade you for the 160 if you have the 87-89 model.

You would have to try and find a 160 speedo white face.. good luck,

Can I get a pic up with my post count?

I might consider a trade.

My speedo is off anyway. I dont think the right gear for my 373's is on the speedo cable. maybe I could try a couple different gears and see how close I can get it....

Sounds like you need to change the speedo gear that goes in the trans.

I dont want to take advantage of you... The 160 speedo will bring alot of cash on ebay. I got my 140 off ebay for 50 bucks.. if you kee watcing ebay youll get one cheap. Id keep the 160 they are rear.

I appreciate the honesty. I figured it's worth a bit, that's why I asked first before I boogered it up....

Guess I'll wait a bit and see if a speedo comes along... Have a new lens to put on too. Lot's of other winter projects for the car in the mean time.....parking brake cables, front CA bushings, pinion seal, headliner...blah blah blah

I know it needs a speedo gear to get the reading closer. It has a 4 cyl t-5 in it at the moment too. I dont remember what gear was on the cable when I replaced the clutch and bellhousing.

Nope on the 160... I have the kit from LRS for the 140 speedo. (wife didn't know when she ordered it, but God bless her for buying me cool stuff for the hotrod!) :nice:

I was thinking about the red testors model paint too. Thanks!

Maybe this will be bigger....

Does anyone have pics of there stock cluster with LED bulbs? That might be the ticket right there........

Hopefully this comes out right.......

From those of you who have done the overlays....do you paint the needles a different color or leave them white?

What overlay kit do you have?

Is it the kind you peel off the original faces and stick the new faces on? Or is it the kind you slip over the needles and it has its own power source.

If its the peel and stick kind....don't do it. They look like crap. They won't light evenly at all unless you want to hack up your cluster and install additional lights to make it even.

If in could go back in time, I would have left my gauges alone, or bought the slip on kind like NR Automobile Accessories has

Ps...your 160mph speedo is rare don't mod it. Just buy a 140mph speedo

I just ordered a kit from whitegauges.net. With the kit I also decided to splurge and get the LED upgrade for the dash lights too. Overall the kit looks awesome. I did run into some problems with getting the right overlay for the speedo though (being in Canada tough to get the metric stuff) but whitegauges.net took my unit made up the proper overlays and installed them for me and sent them back. $120 with shipping vs a much more expensive gauge swap. Hope that helps

If you look on eBay sometimes you will see just the 140 speedo by it's self.
Some of the guys on eBay selling mustang parts make a living doing it.
If you send them a message and tell them your looking for just the 140
speedo and not the whole cluster they can set you cheap. I payed
$25 for my 140 with shipping.

And I 2nd the idea of no stick on overlay. Get the one that slips over
the needle and needs to be wired in I have used both.

Thanks for the advice guys.......

Gonna wait on the overlays for a bit. If I come across a 140 at some point maybe I'll try the white faces. And look into the others you all have recommended

For now I'll clean up the cluster and put in some white LED's and the new lens and move on the the other projects that are more pressing.

I can think of a bunch of questions I have about those......
