I’m guessing this is a sign of a jacked up dash… any other things could be causing this?

If the car is not moving, the speedometer is stuck. If the needle was bouncing while the car is moving or staying at 0, I’d suspect the cable.

Does it operate?

Since the guage face has been replaced, the needle has been removed. The stock guage has a needle test with a tick mark slightly under it. You position the needle so it naturally rests pointing to this alignment tick. You then lift the needle up and replace the needle stop.

I have those same guage faces. They never installed the stop. All the 140 and 85mph guages have the stop. The motorsport/SSP 160mph does not.

With the stop removed, the needle naturally wants to rest somewhat over the alignment tick.

Since your missing the stop, you won’t be able to use it as a rest. You’ll have to ballpark it somewhat below 0mph and live with it. Or find a needle stop

When it did work it would go all over the place swinging all over the place. When it did settle in it would be exactly this amount off so it would say 70 miles when going 50.

open to either. A few times when I would be sitting at idle the gauge would sweep all over the place...so I am guessing the cluster is bad.

The tachometer would sweep? All those guages are seperate and can be replaced individually. So if the tach is bad, it can be replaced. The issue however is the guage faces cannot be easily transfered without causing potential uneven illumination due to the glue.

It might be best to buy a new 90-93 140MPH cluster if you have tach and speedo issues

No the actual speedometer would sweep.

I’m not even sure where to look to find an actual speedometer replacement, I have found a few instrument clusters online.

1992 conv. GT. I just bought the car so I’m not really sure what’s been done to it except for 410 gear, headers and TF intake

@Mustang5L5 how difficult would it be to remove the white face coverings?

I don’t even know what that gauge came off of. It was on the car when I got it

The white faces were likely a kit similar to this.

That’s a BBk gauge face kit. There’s nothing under it because you peel the old ones off and put these on.

He’s better off getting anew cluster and tossing that on eBay to the highest bidder

So what about getting the speedometer cleaned (everyone needs a clean Speedo) or repaired? I no longer know of local shops, but not everyone who knows how to should have yet passed away from old age.
