Speedometer quit working....

So I was driving down the road and looked down to see that I was in 5th gear at about 3k rpm and going 0 mph, ha. The cable is in the back of the cluster, the gear is on the end of the speed sensor and not stripped. I stuck my finger into the hole of the tranny for the speed sensor and didn't feel anything. I'm guessing that the gear thats in the tranny is probably in a million pieces throughout the case? It is made of plastic right? Its a WC T5. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
 
Edit: When you spin the speed sensor gear does the needle move? If not, then the cable or the speed sensor is broken.

The tranny drive gear is a pretty heavy gear, about 1" long and it fits over the output shaft. I doubt if it would fail, but it could have moved out of position. It is held in place with a clip. Here is a link to the T5 rebuild manual with some pics See pg 3-6 for the speedo gear:
