Hello StangNet Experts,

Can you provide a (guess)-timate of engine HP based on the information below? This is my first new post to StangNet but I have been learning from all your expertise for quite a while.

As a bit of background, I am the original owner of this ’83 GT and it has been great fun. When I bought it, I always envisioned getting a chance to rebuild this motor and have some fun with it. Unfortunately, it took about 25 years for this motor to give me the opportunity (after about 220k miles). I’ve attached a report of what I’ve done so far but will boil down the pertinent engine rebuild facts.

Low end: Stock block and crank. Bored 20 mils over, polished crank. Rotating assembly (crank, flywheel, damper) dynamically balanced for new pistons, rings, rods, etc.

Edelbrock Heads: Performer RPM, non-emissions SBF 60229 with 60cc chamber volume. Estimate 9.3:1 using Felpro head gasket (I should have used the Edelbrock gasket to get 9.5:1).

CompCams valve train: XTREME Energy (35-238-3 XE262H) camshaft, Magnum (1442-16) 1.6:1 roller tipped rocker arms, hydraulic lifter set (832-16), Magnum (7632-16) 6.800” hardened push rods (new rod length for best rocker geometry using adjustable PR tool), double roller steel gear timing set (2120).

Air/fuel system: Edelbrock Intake manifold (7121) Performer RPM, Edelbrock (1406) Performer series 600CFM carburetor, stock fuel pump (tried Edelbrock (7125) kept blowing top oil seal).

Exhaust and ignition: MAC exhaust with 1.5” shortie equal length headers, Summit 2.5” H pipe and 2.5” dual exhaust. MSD 6A ignition box, 8479 distributor, and coil/wires.

Other: Stock BW T5 tranny with Zoom Series 2 (HP47283-1) clutch/pressure plate set (Kevlar with coefficient of friction of 0.36). Summit 700006 short throw shifter with adjustable stops.

To help me with my upgrade choices, I used the CompCams Camquest program/GUI (screenshots in the attachment) which estimated my HP and torque at ~400HP/380ft-lb respectively. Sounds pretty impressive but I think it is a bit optimistic. Long story-short, I love the performance of this motor. I’ve got over 5k miles on it already and it runs great. I don’t bang on it too hard from stop lights (in order to preserve the T5) but when rolling along this motor screams to 6000RPM with impressive power! The carb might be the weak link but I have it tuned (with the rod/spring/jet kit) so it is very driveable (EFI is too pricey for me).

Anyhow, guesstimates for HP are appreciated. I look forward to your inputs.

I think the calculator is being generous, but you may be close. You are probably near the 300 rwhp mark (350-360 at the flywheel).

The important thing is that you love it and are enjoying what you have done. Lets see the car! Original owner '83, and the stock engine went 220K miles??? Very cool!

By the way, what "seat of the pants" drivetrain efficiency factor do you like for a manual? Something like 80-85%?

My bad, I didnt download the pdf initially. Youve done a lot of work, and the car looks great. Glad you updated those old 90's wheels, lol.

For a T5, if I remember right, the parasitic loss is about 15%. There is one good way to know what your car makes...

Very nice mustang:nice: You’ve got to love an ‘83!

I’m betting it’ll be in the 275rwhp range at best. Still, that in a 3000lb car is a bunch of fun.

It’s really cool that you’ve kept it so long.
 
I believe you should be able to pull out 300 rwhp with tuning of timing when you take it to the dyno. It sounds like to be a very solid and dependable rebuild.
