I have a 1985 foxbody 5.0 HO with a Edlebrock 650 carb. Recently changed out my ignition control module and distributor cap and I removed my smog pump. I believe I do have some vacuum issues. Also will not turn over unless I use Pyroil (started fluid) it will idle immediately to about 1500rpm and die even if I try to give it a little gas it dies.. I'm completely lost as is it a wiring issue somewhere, is it a vacuum leak. Please help

Your carb is not feeding fuel to the engine, look into the throat and pump the throttle to see if it's squirting fuel into the bores.
Mechanical fuel pump or electric?

Thank you for replying. Mechanical fuel pump and it's not getting fuel from the pump to the fuel filter it's bone dry so carb isn't getting anything.

So you said you have a mechanical fuel pump and then you said you here the pump come on when you turn the key on? So is the pump electric or a mechanical unit on the side of the timing chain cover?

It could be the sock filter in the tank is plugged.

How can it be mechanical if you hear it come on when you turn the key on? The only way it is a mechanical pump if it is mounted on the side of the timing chain cover. Pictures would be very helpful here.

Also pulled all the lines from the fuel pump and barely had any gas dribble out. Like literally a small splash average individual palm size worth of gasoline

Sock filter is in the tank on the pickup for the fuel pump. Looks like this:

1985 is the one year that the Mustangs came either carbureted or with CFI (central fuel injection). Carbed cars came with a mechanical fuel pump that physically mounts to the timing chain cover and is driven by an eccentric that is installed on the front of the camshaft timing gear. The CFI cars had two electric pumps. One low pressure pump in the tank and one high pressure pump mounted external to the tank.

Some folks removed the CFI and high pressure pump and used the low pressure pump to feed a carburetor.

@limp, can you post up a picture of the mechancial pump install on your '83?
