Steering wheel inserts

After much indecision, I decided to buy torch red steering wheel inserts for my 2007 GT, torch red or course with the optional red interior.
While I like the look, I have a problem with the way the bottom insert fits. It does not fit flush with the steering wheel. The others do.
The edge actually is quite noticable when driving.
Anyone have these inserts and have a similar problem?
Do you think it would be possible to do some trimming to make it fit better?
I don't have the tools needed or confidence to start whittling on them.

I would contact who you got them from about your issue! I would imagine they are using a Ford insert to start with
I'm going to remove mine and paint them, so I know that they will fit properly

I have e-mailed them and not heard a thing. I would have had my factory inserts painted. But my body guy wants $100 minimum to paint anything. These were $50 or so and I can go back to factory if I wish.

Finally painted my inserts last night! I used the left over primer and black satin paint I used on my sub box, so I had no money tied up in this project. Actual labor time (remove, sand/scuff, clean, dry, prime (2 light coats) and paint (2 light coats) was about an hour. I allowed 30 minutes in between the coats of primer/paint (which was ok according to the directions on the cans I let them sit overnight for 8 hours before installing them this morning. It was still "misting" outside, so I didn't feel like using my Canon, but I wanted them back in and pics taken!

Here is how it went:
OEM and ready to get rid of that brushed aluminum look

Backside to show the compression clips

150 grit sand paper followed by 0000 steel wool, then rinsed and dried

The primer (left) and paint (right) used

Two light coats of primer (to avoid "pooling" and runs)

Two light coats of black satin (to avoid "pooling" and runs)

Inserts removed

Installed

I can't believe the difference it made!!!!! I love the way it turned out! Going outside now to finish cleaning up inside the car and take some much better pics

I wish I could find torch red in a spray can.
Looks good. Still not had a reply to my e-mail. I have always been pleased in the past with Moss Mustang.

It came out really good Kdog......satin black has a nice pop to it. Funny mine are black and I am wishing I had the alum ones! LOL

I like the blue-ish dash lighting you have. Was that stock? Mine 06 has a green tinted lighting.

Was just looking at my incerts before making this post and found out I have a tilt steeling wheel! Duh!! LOL

i like the black look, thats why i did not opt for the silver interior panels, but i miss the leather wrapped wheel.

Looks good. Still not had a reply to my e-mail. I have always been pleased in the past with Moss Mustang.

any paint store that sells auto paint can mix up a couple spray cans. Take in your paint code and they'll do it up for you. Or you can buy it online, I bought some satin silver to paint my wife's window louvers. It was about $10-$12 delvd.

that's an awesome idea . how do you take the inserts out without effin anything up ? plus i wouldn't know what color to paint mine. my technical car color is "sangria red" and it's pretty close to candy apple red. i do like the black, but i'd like something different.. but i'm sure black is the only thing that would look right.

You have a Mustang that is sangria red? News to me that they came in that color.

yep, at least that's what color the chart said when i matched it with the paint code. does it not sound right ?


& how do you take the inserts out ?

I have arthritis and do not have the strength in my hands to do it. You grip them on the outside. While squeezing on the inserts near the outer rim you gently lift up and towards the center of the wheel.
Check out the inserts from Moss Mustang. They have on line instructions as to how to do it. It is easy if you have the strength in your hands to do it. Age and arthritis have taken that away from me. Be gentle though, and lift towards the center of the wheel.

awesome, i'll try it. i broke my hand a little over a year ago so it's not great really but hopefully i can try and get them off. and when you take them off do they pop right back on ?

Just reverse the process. Put the end near the center in first and fold down. You will see the slots that hold on the inserts.
The two side pieces I got fit fine. The bottom did not. The OEM piece went on so easy I did it myself.
I ended up returning the painted pieces.
